2021 Passport Elite auto engine idle goes to neutral STALLS! and then won't go back to drive. I'm dead in the water on the road. This has happened twice. The first time I was on a major high speed road at a light when stalled out. I put on Hazard lights and it took a few minutes before the car would start back up again. The whole system was locked up. I had a couple of people pull over to try and help me - it was all Honda issue problems. This was in April 2022. My car was purchased new at a major Honda dealership in Houston in December 2020, so it's less than 18 months old and is driven maybe 2-10 times a day, so not much daily wear and tear on the car. Since then I have been in the habit MOST of the time to auto shut off this feature by tapping the button. However, I forgot today and ended up stalling out again when the engine went to auto idle in park, stalled, and then it would not go back to drive. I was stalled in a fast food line this time. It took almost five minutes before the car would turn back over - I waited and gave the car time to reset, tried a couple of times with no success, then again and the car finally started back up. I'm ready to give this car back and shop for a product outside of Honda anything. I'm very disappointed in Honda in general. I thought Honda was a highly reliable car to have an engine to run for many years down the road - at least that is what I had heard and researched. I do not like this feature at all! and wonder if other car makes/models have a higher success rate with idle engine features - or it's just a bad idea all around. If it happens a third time, I'm giving up this car and looking for something much more reliable and will never buy Honda again. Love the Passport - HATE the AUTO IDLE to STALL and won't start back up again feature. This is definitely a safety issue. I'm surprised, and grateful, that reports of car accidents due to this problem have not happened.

Everyone needs to complain and file complaint with National Transportation Site. Happened to me a few times in different situations. Traffic - Stop Sign -Red light. Brought it to dealer said could not find problem. Honda will not recognize a problem until someone gets hurt. I have a 2016 Honda Pilot Elite.https://www.piloteers.org/threads/nhtsa-investigation-announced-for-pilot-engines-that-fail-to-start

Several times our 2016 Elite has stalled at a stoplight. It takes time to start back up. Dealer said transmission software update may be problem.

Has anyone else heard of this. I know there’s a long thread on transmission problems but I just can’t read the whole thing to see if this is mentioned there

That happened to me. I needed a new battery. My engine has the cut off and it was explained to me this wears out the battery quicker then normal. 2017 currently has 39k miles and this was maybe 5k ago…

Happened to me for the 2nd time in the last two months. Both times at stop lights on busy streets. Had to throw on my hazards and it took me about 60 seconds to find the right combination of turn off, open the door, close the door, brake restart a few times before the car would turn on. Bringing it to the dealership this week to document the problem (Not expect them to do anything). Once it gets back from the dealer I'm bypassing the idle stop. Too dangerous. It's going to get someone hurt or killed when they stop at a light and someone not paying attention plows into them. Also opened a ticket with NHSTA.

Took my Pilot in for service last week and added the Auto Stop/Start failure to restart issue and they said the couldn't replicate it. Admittedly, I wasn't surprised; and, when I spoke with the tech, I explained the issue and that there was the NHTSA Safety Inspection on the system which he was obviously unaware of as he denied it or was thinking that I was discussing the safety issue with the Starter button. So, obviously, even though Honda has been notified, they haven't told their personnel about it (this doesn't surprise me either since I suspect they just wait for the results of the safety inspection prior to taking any action). Still frustrating that this feature is causing so many problems yet it cannot be reproduced to prove there is an issue.

I had this problem for years with our 2016 honda pilot and posted about it on this forum. Submitted multiple complaints about it to NHTSA and Honda beginning in 2017. I checked the NHTSA report on the investigation they've opened and my complaints are included in their report. Honda replaced the battery stop/start button, starter motor assembly, etc. Nothing fixed the problem. Someone from NHTSA emailed a few times. Last time I heard from them was in fall 2019 but they told me they couldn't share what was going in in their research into the problem. Since it looked like no solution was in sight, we finally got rid of it for a new car. Will never buy Honda again. Given that people were complaining about this more than 5 years ago and they are just getting around to a "preliminary investigation" now doesn't give me confidence this will be resolved quickly, but maybe those of us who purchased this defective car can get some compensation.

I have a 2019 Pilot that has been fine for 3 years and over 60k miles; however in the last couple months it has started stalling all stop signs/lights. When it stalls I generally get an orange collision light that comes on for a brief second then the engine comes back to life. It has now gone to neutral and completely shut down twice. I took it to Honda for service after the first time and had system updates needed so they finished the updates and said it was fixed. Happened again today taking several minutes in busy traffic to get the car started again, no system updates needed. Honda can’t discuss repair without duplicating the issue and of course don’t have loaner cars available while they drive my car around trying to make this happen. Terribly frustrating and dangerous. I’ve been a Honda fan for years but this is my last one - too many issues with this car and have to fight for service.

If you haven't already, file a complaint with NHTSA. Did you show them that Honda has extended the warranty on stop/start button and will replace that for free? It probably won't fix the problem because it didn't for me. Also did you show them that NHTSA has opened an investigation into this so they know you're not making it up? I admit that was always frustrating when Honda would just say they couldn't replicate the problem or find any problem that needed fixing so nothing they could do.

Thank you to everyone who has posted your pilot "stall" experience. Very insightful troubleshooting tips and advice. We have 2016 Pilot Elite with 116K miles and just experienced the random stall 3x's in the past week. All at stoplights with traffic behind us. Fortunate not to have an accident. Similar experience with "collision mitigation system error" on dash, put car in park, hazards on, push brake, and hit the start button 3-5 times before engine restarts. Significant safety issue.

We have maintenance appointment this week and will discuss with local Honda Service Department. We did have a "keyless system error" 2 weeks ago and replaced battery on key FOB #1. Haven't seen error message since but now experience the stall. Expect we will need a new battery since current one is 3 years old but it appears it's a temporary fix based on previous posts. Will now push the button to turn off the auto restart and register issue with NHTSA. Will post update after service appointment. Thanks again Piloteers!

Update: Ironically it stalled again turning into the Honda Dealership the morning of the appointment. The service advisor was not aware of the stall issue and the service technician could not duplicate the stall issue. I've noticed it stalling after 20-25 minutes of drive time. Anyway, I asked to check the battery and it was the original battery, 6 years old. So I had that replaced and have not had the issue over the past 3 days. Will continue to watch and notice other posters mentioned this could be a temporary fix. We've had no other issues with this pilot, so hopeful the new battery fixes the issue. I also submitted the form to the NHTSB.

FYI, when I called dealership today about another issue, they told me there is now a recall to fix this issue via SW. I'm taking it in Saturday and will report back if I see any improvement....

Anyone else gotten the idle start/stop SW recall installed and have experience with it?

Interesting. I asked the dealer when I picked up my new Pilot last November (Elite) and they told me that they cannot disable the auto-start-stop at the dealership. I find hard to believe that they cannot check (or uncheck) a box or change a parameter in the software to permanently disable this feature, which I don't like and would rather permanently disabling it.

Just buy the idlestop device and install it yourself. Only takes a few minutes.

I saw some threads talking about different ways to disable it and it's something I'll consider. However, now might not be a good idea, since it could impact the warranty?
Only if they can prove that it's the cause of your issue.

I have the idle stopper installed as well as the VCM Tuner II and I was at my dealer last week to get the battery replaced. They didn't bat an eye or say anything about the mods I installed. They also did the auto stop TSB while I was there. So you have nothing to worry about.
