The local Honda dealer performs a BG PXT2 Performance transmission fluid exchange using Honda DW-1 ATF, plus BG Quick Clean and BG ATC Plus transmission fluid conditioner.
Can't say if those products contain whale oil, or not.

So do most people chose MaxLife due to cost and ease of getting it? Because if that's the only reason, I can't imagine why you would want to cheap out on something so important as your car's transmission.

True but for good reason. We have commercial trucks that used to need oil changes every 20K miles, we switched them to full synthetic oil from a recommendation from our Shell oil rep and now we get 80-100K miles between changes. Cost is double for the product but huge savings in labor and taking the trucks of a lane 1/4-1/5 of the time we were. They have a new formula coming we may get 160K between changes. This is all done with sample testing sent to their labs to tell us if the oil still meets the manufacturers spec, and they do. We've had no failures caused by not changing the oil at 20K.

Does the oil filter get changed during the 80-100K interval of usage for the oil, or does the filter last that long, too?

I wouldn't call it a fetish. I'd call it a higher standard over conventional. DW-1 is made with Dino Oil.

Yes, but DW-1 is not full synthetic since it actually contains petroleum. If you synthesize petroleum (extracting a component) it's no longer petroleum. It's obviously not as refined.

Are suggesting that there's no petroleum left in a synthetic oil/fluid?

I think that in most instances, It's the wanting to believe your getting the best, because your paying more. Especially if DW-1 ATF service is being paid for at the dealership.

It's more about not having to crawl under the vehicle and not having to find someplace to dispose of the old ATF.

I believe if you really wanted MaxLife ATF, you'd find a way.

So far, BG-fortified DW-1 seems sufficient.

If you don't mind unsythesized dino oil in your transmission.

It matches the unsynthesized dino oil in the engine.

If your not beating the bush everyday, you might be alright.

I'm getting a little old for that sort of activity.

We all have our reasons, and that's OK. For me, it's both reasons: I feel it's better for my transmission now and for its longevity, and the fact it's much cheaper also brings me joy.

Ya, I checked the Fram website, clicked on transmission fluid and it sent me to advanced. You'd think they would have a spec sheet somewhere instead of just telling me it's ok for my Honda.

If only we could see what it says on the back of the bottle.
