Hey everyone,

Trying to purchase my first new Pilot and I'm getting close, but my question is... once you've negotiated the "out the door" price via email, what do you do next? do I leave a $500 deposit or something until I can go to the showroom and finalize?

usually a dealership would want a deposit but Ive never really seen a dealership work out a price over the phone like that. And If It were me I wouldn't leave a deposit until you can make sure you can get a receipt. Ive seen many dealerships say never received deposits or just steal the money out right. usually the smaller used car dealers but it happens at the big ones.

And most dealers will sell the car even If they have a deposit so don't let them believe you have to leave it. they are gonna try convince you Its the only way do secure the car but If someone talks in willing to pay more I'm sure It will be sold out from under you.

Your and the dealer's understanding of the "out of the door" price may not be the same. Make sure the email price quote spells out exactly what included in the price, especially if it includes TTL (most car buyers do not think about this until they see them in the purchase contract), dealership fees, destination and delivery, etc.

We bought our '16 Pilot via email - our local dealer was pre-sold for nine months (It's true, I've been a customer and had the same salesman for 28 years).

The dealership was 350 miles away and had the exact Pilot we wanted.

We:

1) Negotiated a firm price
2) Negotiated a firm price for our trade in - a 2014 CRV EX-L
3) Negotiated for HondaCare (We used online prices to get the price down- paid $50.00 over the online price and wrapped it into the loan)
4) Had them give us a truthful assessment of 'doc's & fee's'
5) Gave them a $500 deposit from a credit card (NOT a debit card). You can back charge a credit card.

The transaction went well and we are very happy.

We dotted our 'I's' and crossed all of the 't's'

It will work out well - use a credit card for the deposit!

I negotiated price via email and phone - spelled out exactly what out-the-door meant.

I was going to go to the dealer to give a deposit as he had to get car transferred in from elsewhere.

But I decided to stop at another dealer that had exact car I wanted. I said I had negotiated deal with another dealer but said I would buy right then from them if they matched it.

They basically matched it and I drove home with it. I had them put on side rails and trailer hitch so that boosted price but worked out well as that is exactly what I wanted.
