Honda Care Denied Sunroof Assembly Repair

I have 2001 EX-L. It has 90,000 miles, and I have a Honda Care plan that goes thorugh 100,000 miles.

Recently, the sunroof has not been functioning properly. When I press the open button, it will attempt to open part way and the retract again. Or worse, if I can get it open, I will sometimes refuse to close unless I try multiple times and coax it from the outside. The sensor is obviously detecting a perceived instruction and reversing.

Essentially the sunroof unusable.

The dealer said (quoting from the report) "the whole seal is deformed, distored and dried out. The roof is dirty from failed attempts to open the sunroof. Seal and frame found to be dirty too."

The dealer said that Honda Care denied the repair claim, because glass is never covered, much as a side window would not be covered if it broke. If it were the motor or the seal they would cover it (but the glass and the seal are one part).

The repair cost would be almost $700.

Does anyone have any experience with appealing a Honda Care decision to the regional manager or higher?

My position is that this is unlike the glass cracking or just getting dirty, it was a failure somewhere in the entire sunroof system design that caused this to happen. I am up-to-date on all my maintenance, and no one from Honda ever suggested doing anything different with the sunroof maintenace.

(BTW, I asked my insurance agent about coverage, and that was also denied.)

Thoughts?

I used them when our AC compressor failed on our CRV 6K outside of the warranty. I found them very reasonable to work with. It took them around 5 months, but they ended up covering the compressor and labor. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was getting reimbursed via a Honda gift card good at dealerships for parts, labor or vehicle purchases. It had a 1yr limitation on use so I ended up buying a gift certificate from the dealership that had no expiration and using that to cover parts and maintenance for a couple years.

I tried Twitter, and they referred me to the 800 numbers for both Honda Care and Honda. Honda Care again said that glass and rubber are considered trim items, and so they are not covered.

Honda America said that they would not repair on goodwill, since I am so far over the bumper-to-bumper coverage.

My last step is to have the service manager at my local dealer appeal to them again. My position is that the seal is deformed because of a manufacturing defect, so the exclusion of weather and acts of God does not apply. The exclusion against glass clearly does not apply, as they glass is not broken (just the attached seals), and the exlcusion against replacing trim should not apply either, as the problem is functional not cosmetic.

BTW, Honda told me that Honda Care is a separate corporation from Honda, and that Honda has no way of asking Honda Care to make an exception. Not sure if that's true, but that's what they told me.
