Got Fixed: Fuel Door Stuck

This is a late post; wanted to share in case anyone would have the same problem in the future. Hopefully not.

On October 13th, (yeah, Friday the 13th!) our '16 Pilot EX-L was running low on fuel (Fuel Light came on). Estimated fuel range displayed on the dashboard was 21 miles but it's alright since our favorite Top Tier gas station is just 7 miles away. Arrived at that station fine. But when I pressed the Fuel Door button and got out, I noticed that the door is still closed. So I pressed it again, then it dawned on me that the fuel door won't budge. Gingerly tried to pry it but it's shut tight. Then I gradually increased my strength in trying to get it to open but it wouldn't. That's when I started to become worried. It's 10pm and my dealer is obviously closed by then.

Called Honda Roadside Assistance. After a few minutes of being put on hold, I was able to speak with a Support Staff and I told him my situation. After being put on hold for another few minutes he came back to say that Honda Roadside Assistance won't be able to help me because it's not any of the following:

* Battery problems;
* Door Unlock help;
* Out of fuel; or
* Tire problems

Wasn't offered any help at all. I can still make the trip back home but I'm worried I'll be adding more problems to what I currently have, so I said "to heck with it", and pried the door hard. It opened and after that I thoroughly checked it if I broke something else in the process like the door latch itself. Looked fine so I was relieved I could put gas and go my way. In hindsight, I first thought that maybe because of the low fuel in the tank it created a 'vacuum' that sucked in the door. As soon as I got home, I pressed the button again to test my hypothesis. It failed. The door won't open again. Clearly there must be something that broke from the time I last opened it when it was working fine.

Had to make the un-scheduled trip to my dealer the next day and explained (and apologized) to them that since this to me is classified under an emergency situation I had to bring my Pilot in. They were proactive with it and since it was on a Saturday afternoon they offered me a loaner instead while they'll go ahead and fix it Monday.

Monday came and got a call from our dealer to let me know that the fuel door has been fixed. They informed me that the problem was what Honda called a "fuel cable grommet" which is actually a plastic part that holds the cable taut. Since that thing broke, no matter how the button is pressed the tension (?) was gone so the door wouldn't open. Long story short it was fixed under warranty and our Pilot is well again.

Just putting this out for those who would encounter the same nerve-wracking issue and would like to do a research in this helpful community.

I had the opposite problem once... the door would not latch closed.

For either problem, you can get to the mechanism from inside your cargo area, and actuate the door manually if you need to. There is a little cover on the inside that is about 4" x 6" that you can pop open, and see the motorized actuator that pulls the cable. If you pull on the white part right in the middle of the picture (that looks like it has 2 finger recesses), that will pull the cable and release the door.

In my case, the actuator got stuck in the "release" position, because mechanic at the local dealership had stupidly taped the trailer wiring to the moving part of the mechanism when they installed my Honda Towing package. It worked OK for about 6 weeks before it got stuck.

The bottom picture is how the vehicle was delivered to me. The top picture is after I fixed it myself.

Edit: I suspect that the "fuel cable grommet" that the OP had fail, is farther forward and might have required the whole interior panel to be removed to get to it.

Thanks for the Pics, rpengr!

Good point too, rpengr. Forgot to mention this in my post. The mechanic who worked on our Pilot showed this to me before they let us go on our way with the loaner. They had our Pilot lifted a bit and saw that they've opened this panel already. He pointed this out that in the future, when the door gets stuck again, check if this pull latch would open it. But he noted back then that since this is the first thing that he did, obviously there's something else that's broken with our Pilot (which turned out to be the grommet) that's why pulling the latch didn't help.

I know I'm also guilty at times of not RTFM, but sometimes we don't really pay attention (or care) until the problem arises.

Rpengr - Thank you for posting this information I own a 2017 Honda Pilot that I bought new. I’ve taken it to the dealer twice with this problem first time they said it was a bad actuator and second time accused me of going into compartment inside of cargo area and messing with the release. I lit into the service advisor and told him why would I go in that compartment. Yesterday I fueled up my vehicle and the door wouldn’t close so I just did a google search and found this forum. I was able to push in the white plastic trigger and the door closed. Thank you very much and please continue posting your experiences with your Pilot. Thanks again! KB

My 2016 Pilot has the same issue, bought mine brand new on June of 2016 and after two years 2018 my fuel door actuator had to be replaced. Now it's 2020 and I have to get the same thing replaced. Honda needs to address this. The first time it was replaced under warranty now they want to charge to replace it.
