Hi All,

Need to check with you all as i feel my local honda dealership are trying to scam me. About 2 weeks ago our 2018 pilot had multiple dash warning lights come on and after some research this seems to be the dreaded bad fuel injector issue.
I know there is a TSB for this out so confused why my dealership is trying to charge me the following...

dtc p0304 set for misfire number 4. found fouled spark plug due to oil consumption. recommend tear down to inspect cylinder walls on front head at this time

number 4 injector very fouled. recommend fuel injectors — PARTS $ 465.75-- LABOR TO INSTALL $537.50

SPARK PLUGS $ 439.18 INSTALLED — # 4 PLUG FOULED OUT FROM OIL

CYLINDER HEAD - ADJUST VALVES-- $865.00

Thank you

Thank you for your feedback. I honestly think it just stinks of a scam to me. I have taken it higher with honda and even they said this seems off and they are going to inform the dealer that this is at least covered under the known TSB for fuel injectors, as per the recommendation from the mechanic at honda.

Milage?
I wouldn’t say that injector replacement isn’t needed, especially if there is a P219A or B or an emission code, otherwise with some quick changes, your Pilot may be able to overcome this issue without any major work.

Disable the VCM.
Be strict with 5k mile oil changes using a quality full synthetic oil. (Old thinning oil tends to travel places it shouldn’t.
Use Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Shell gasoline (Additives PEA is best)
Clean Mass Airflow Sensor.
New/Clean air filter.

Mileage is 91k and i dont know how to disable the vcm. The oil changes have all been done by our honda dealer themselves. It just smells this whole price quote they are trying on. I have taken it up with honda customer service and they agree all this seems off by the dealer.

I think more and more people are starting to realize the dealer exists for one reason, to sell you another vehicle. better to start looking for an independent shop once your warranty is up and you are outside the scope of any extended coverage. also, just because a TSB exists for your vehicle, does not qualify you for free parts and labor. many TSBs exist purely to help technicians in the right direction towards a repair/fix. some happen to come attached with extended power train warranties so people don't run out and jump on the class-action band-wagon. the dealer is probably using lower quality generic bulk oil from the drum, in which case it shouldn't go past 5,000 miles.

I agree with the selling a new car route and I also do suspect they use cheap oil. The thing is this is the same issue as around 30 thousand miles ago and was repaired via new injectors and plugs under the TSB, seems strange to me based on that how they wont honor yet another failure of their bad manufacturing of injectors.

@Cole m Your P0304 falls within the extended warranty, as the TSB specifically says codes P0300-P0306 apply. But they also have to do specific test to confirm that a defective injector(s) is actually causing the code. I would question them about this and make sure they aren't just trying to pull something. But having said that, fouled injectors and plugs could also be causing that code to be thrown, and the fouling may have nothing to do with a faulty injector, and may be related to something else like a bad plug, misadjusted valve, etc. Like was mentioned above, VCM has been suspected/confirmed as a culprit of fouled plugs and injectors. Anyway, yeah I would push back a little on them and make sure they did their due diligence with the TSB, but at the end of the day, it might just be the result of VCM. And as far as the prices, yes, that's always a scam, lol.

Thank you for your feedback here. The service manager also mentioned to my wife that this is due to a piston issue which in my
Mind is definitely suspect. The car used no oil and no blue smoke out the back at all. The car has already had the TSB done for the Transmission judder issue. I just think they are trying to play the we dont know game. We are in contact with honda head office and they cant underatand why the dealership wont change the injectors under the tsb as per the mechanics email ( recommend fuel injectors)

thanks again

Just because there is a tsb on one part doesn't mean that's the only possible cause. Parts not under recall also fail. Injectors do not cause oil consumption issues. If it's burning oil the spark plug will show it, borescope may also show it. I have yet to see a vcm caused engine issue on this gen motor, and I see 100k plus mile motors daily, starting to see 200k miles as well.
