Front End Popping Noise Finally Resolved!

I have been dealing with an intermittent/growing in consistency popping noise coming from the front end on my 23 EX-L 2WD for some months now, and have been to the dealer multiple times over it, and they pulled through on it!

The sound was a very distinct pop (sometimes multiple few pops) that would typically occur at various low speed situations, especially after the vehicle had been sitting for an appreciable time, such as pulling out of a parking spot when leaving work at the end of the day. The most common occurrence scenario was backing out of my inclined driveway in the mornings, when turning/reversing into the street and then again when taking off in drive and straightening the wheel. Rarely would it do it mid-trip after driving for a while.

I assumed it was going to be the steering rack, as it seems several others here have had theirs replaced for similar complaints. The first time I had my dealer inspect it, they initially had trouble replicating the noise, but my service advisor was finally able to do it himself. They found the front bumper beam needed to be retorqued, and one of the bolts they were able to get over a full turn out of! I picked up the vehicle and it made the noise as I was leaving, still in their lot. Ok, no big deal, let's try again. Several weeks go by until I can get it back to them again, but the sound became much more frequent over this period. They use their Chassis Ears tool on the front bumper beam and confirm the noise is coming from it, so they go ahead and submit the authorization request to Honda to get the part ordered.

Fast forward to this week, the part is in. They replace the front bumper beam (71130-T90-A00), and various associated bolts/hardware (90110-TK4-A00 x8; 93405-06016-04 x7; 95701-10025-05 x4) and retorque everything. The noise still comes back! Wash, rinse, repeat with retorquing various components under the front end (engine mounts, steering rack, subframe) to no avail, until finally the tech gets almost a full turn out of a bolt in the front passenger fender well that goes into the frame. Retorque that and the noise is gone!

Wanted to share with others in case someone else has this issue and it winds up not being the steering rack like in my case. Also very, very pleased with my dealership (Patty Peck Honda in Ridgeland, MS). I feel like a lot of places would have thrown their hands up in the air or stopped before being able to replicate the issue.

Did not comment on whether it would be advisable to be left untreated (referring to the bolt in the fender well), since they only ID'd it as the problem after it had been retorqued. However, as for the front bumper beam, I was advised it was safe to drive while we were waiting for the part to come in.

Hope you get yours resolved!

I feel like I'm having a serious case of deja vu. I could swear that I saw a post about this issue a few years ago, and the outcome was exactly the same. It was multiple pages, and guy had replaced lots of parts and dealer was stumped, until finally they tightened the front bumper support bolts.

A guy I used to work with told me when he was a body man at a dealership, the had a brand new caddy come in. Sold, and repeatedly came back with a knocking noise.............

Long story short they spent hundreds of hours on that noise. One day, a mechanic decided to remove the interior door skins, well, well, well, who tied an empty budweiser bottle on that string so it just dangled and swayed there inside the drivers door? 🤣

Very thankful for their service dept.

Several others here have had a lighter ticking sound (multiple ticks usually) when turning the wheel, and had either the clock spring or steering rack replaced. If you search the forum, there are several threads on that issue. Of note, mine did make the ticking noise that not long after I bought it, but it went away and has not done it in at least a year now I'd say. The popping issue I described above is unrelated however.

Glad your dealer was so awesome. The tech and shop foreman at ours refused to go on a ride along with me 3x. He said "if she can hear it I can" Well they clearly cant. They replaced the left strut and bearing (under warranty) but I had to pay for the right one (1400) and I still have the noise. The mechanic that works on my hubby's older truck took a look and didnt find anything concerning so I said eff it. But im gonna have hubby check this bumper stuff! Lol. Thank you for posting.

@Interpon - many thanks for the screenshot!!! I printed out, gave it to my mechanic and he got ALL of them checked and re-torqued.
Turns it was a partially self-inflicted wound - between the lift kit, aftermarket skid plates and front bumper add-on - good half of them needed tightening, and one bolt actually needed a replacement.
Now I am not hearing bangs/popping sounds, etc. - all seem to be good.

@leoary - I advise to do the same - get them ALL checked and re-torqued.
