Ford Edge

Dealer rented me a Ford Edge today while they did my body work. I had work to do, so I didn't really test it much, but I did do about 20 miles of driving.

The interior was reasonably stylish, with a nice chrome-accented shifter. But the same old Ford climate control knobs... and pretty nondescript seats. Exterior... meh. Not a fan of the bulbous look. But the 17-inch wheels were nice.

The engine was adequate for the vehicle; it felt roughly as quick as the Pilot. The physics of a lower, smaller CUV mean that the Edge feels more carlike weaving through traffic, although there is a weird feeling of disjunction from the road and any sort of feedback. Very numb. Some people will like that, I imagine.

Space in second row was good, but almost nothing behind that. I'm not sure I understand the small-CUV genre. Why not just buy a sedan? A good-sized sedan will carry almost as much and handle better.

When we bought a CRV in 99, we also had an Accord 4 dr sedan. The CRV was inexpensive, got decent mpg for an SUV, had AWD, and held far more than the Accord (especially if you folded the rear seats) with a large opening in the back to put stuff in. In general it gives you the option of carrying more and bulkier stuff than a sedan without going to a mid/full size SUV. Plus they are usually higher and offer AWD for the winter states.

So in driving all of the vehicles during the wife's recent "quest" to replace the Pilot, we drove the edge, and I'll say it's EXTREMELY different than the Pilot. Completely different experience. In the pilot you sit up higher, the window beltline is lower, the driving is much sportier, and it has a much more open feel inside. In many ways the Freestyle is closer to the feel of the Pilot than the Edge. IN the Edge, you sit down inside, the feeling is very heavy when turning and handling, and it feels much tighter inside.

Maybe perception - but what I can say is that the Edge was on the wife's short-list until she drove it- then it fell off within 3 miles...

True, not a lot of reasonably-priced 4WD sedans and wagons out there, once you get past Subaru. But I'd definitely buy a Subaru over the Edge.
