EXL Battery FLA to AGM

The 1 year old battery from AC Delco in my 2016 EXL is leaking from the top and making a mess. Measuring the voltage at idle and 2000rpm seem normal at 14.35v. Thinking of trying an AGM battery. Would this not be a good idea since the OEM is FLA? Hate to create more problems. Thanks for the advice.

If you EX didn't come with an AGM I wouldn't put an AGM in it unless the vehicle is designed for it. AGM batteries charge differently than Flood Acid Batteries and if you charging system is not designed for it you well could shorten the potential life of the battery. It's the same reason that modern battery charges have different settings for Flood Acid Batteries and AGM batteries.

Personally If I had a 1 year old AC Delco I would take it back and either get a refund or a new battery. I would also have the charging system checked. If there is no crack in the battery it may not be leaking, but rather it may be venting because it is getting too hot.

I thought @dr bob mentioned the alternator could also have a shortened life due to the AGM battery?

I usually get AGM when I replace batteries. I've had much less corrosion issues between venting or whatever else.

I just had to do a full charge up on the Pilot. It has 30k on it and will be 3 years old in November. Nobody is fessing up to it but somebody hit the 2nd row map light, maybe the dog did it? My wife said it seemed to start a little slower the day before but didn't say anything. Instead she woke me up in the middle of sleep time to say truck won't start (6pm for me is like 3am to people that work dayshift). Nothing was responding, barely a very dim yellow flicker from front map lights when door was opened. Tailgate wouldn't even unlock (where are your jumper cables or portable jump starter?). Yes it's an SUV and you can crawl in but still sucks.

I tested the battery and it was down to 6.2V 😱 . I didn't touch anything else and hooked up the CTEK charger and looked in car after about 5 minutes. 2nd row map light glowing brightly.

I charged it fully and tested it after about 36 hours sitting. 12.7V, 680CCA, testing at 100%. I'll keep checking randomly.

Hopefully you caught it before it killed a cell!

Fun fact, on some vehicles, when the battery goes that low the tailgate with a power latch won't unlatch. Keeping your jump pack in the storage area back there is a real pain to access when the battery dies.

Hey Abyen, Don’t forget that once you have the battery out clean the area really well with baking soda and water. This will neutralize the acid that leaked out of your battery. You may need to pull the battery tray. This will keep your engine compartment from rusting.

While we are talking batteries, has anyone run a Optima Yellow Top in their Pilot. I ran a Red Top in my Tacoma years ago. Has the quality remained changed for better or worse?

I have original battery in my 2017 Pilot, all was good until yesterday. went to church and no problem at all, decided to go grocery shipping after church and won't start after food shopping, no sign at all of weak battery which was odd. jump started and went home, did quick check and verify only battery was at fault. Since it is original battery and little over 4 years old, I got my $$ worth already. Was going to Costco or BJ to get Interstate battery for about 120 but when calling to verify stock, neither BJ or Costco was able to tell me, did not want to waste time going there just to find no stock (with my luck, pretty sure that was going to happen), did a quick research and found Home depot Exide battery for 109 and if you sign up newsletter with cell phone, you get a 10 off 100 coupon. Was able to check stock online and went ahead.
Battery was perfect fit and 3 years exchange warranty, (Costco and BJ Interstate was 30 months only) not bad at all.

So my son was getting ready to go skiing and the warning light came on again. I went and checked and it had 12.2V and 580 CCA. I went to Costco and got the regular flooded Interstate H6 for $124 tax included (+$15 core). I hooked up my CTEK charger to terminal in fuse box that goes right to battery and ground point and set it to supply just so I wouldn't lose any info. PSA you will still have voltage at battery cables if you do this. I never got any of the OBD2 plug versions but some I saw need another battery to clamp to. I took out the oldbattery, hardest part was that clip that goes over the hold down post, cleaned all dirt and sand and installed new. New one at test before install was 12.7V and 900CCA.

NOW the issue- new battery is in, I drove to return core, get gas and a couple things for his trip, about 20 minutes and 2 starts. I come out from last stop and low battery warning is on! I check the stuff and I'm at 12.3V and 740CCA. Running is charging at 14.2V, no clue on amps if alternator has a bad diode. I went to Honda and showed them. 2 service advisors said they hadn't seen that message before.

Now to add to strange and recreate to maybe help technician. If you get in, foot on brake and start car, no message, starts right up, cranks normal. If you get in and push key on WITHOUT foot on brake just ignition on, warning message appears. press brake and push start again, starts right up.

I have a loaner CRV, Pilot is waiting to be diagnosed, my son took his Kia Forte to go skiing instead. Honda will do the hood and radio software recalls while it is there. I also noticed a slight seeping wet from tranny at case by middle bolts so that is on the list. 39 months old, 36,519 miles. :(

I'll put same reply in a couple battery threads for other searches in future by others.

So the dealer said Pilot was all fixed and the software update solved the problem and they charged by 5 day old battery to make sure no issues. Me- in my head "OK, Yeah right but I'll give the benefit of doubt" "kind of glad I bought that Honda Care from Hyannis".

While it's sitting in the service lane for pick up running I shut it off, foot off brake, turn ignition on, low battery warning. I walk back to advisor nicely smiling and say it's not fixed. They come out, confirm and take it back to the shop. They then came back after 15 minutes and say that they reset the battery sensor (not sure how they do that) AND that they ordered a new battery sensor, come back Saturday for quick replacement but the message should be gone and stay off but keep them updated. I don't know if better to let wife drive for the short trip and monitor or my longer work trip and monitor. It will wind up with her so that is probably best way.

I got home 10 minutes later and tried same scenario and no warning lights. Do capacitance test and I'm 12.8V and 750 CCA and 14.2V when running so good at this point. I guess the software update wasn't the answer maybe  ? Stay tuned....

In the meantime just making sure the GooLoo portable jump pack is topped off and ordered some of Daltongang's USB charger with voltmeter to keep an easier eye on it. I need some of the rocker switch mount ones for the other cars where my phones are plugged in.
