Engine swap - J35Z1 replacing J35A9

I need to replace the engine on my 2008 4WD Pilot. Original engine is a J35A9.

I've found an almost new J35Z1 engine from a 2008 2WD Pilot. Visual inspection reveals that the J35Z1 engine has a small difference in the valves. I suspect this is something that controls the VCM, which is the only difference listed in the engine specs between 2WD and 4WD Pilots. However, this also means that there must be some differences in the electronics.

Has anyone performed this swap successfully?

It started with a timing belt failure. When the engine was opened, there was also some wear in the cylinder block, and aluminum blocks apparently can't be repaired. So the shop recommends an engine swap as the cheapest and fastest solution.

How many miles does your pilot has? I wonder what could have cause this or prevent it from hapenning?

I don't really know how many miles it has. I bought it cheap and crashed in an auction site with 27,XXX "non original" miles and a previous repair from a "serious accident". Currently the odometer currently reads 55,000, but again, these are "non original" miles. The mechanic that it working on it is 100% sure that the amount of wear on the engine is the result of a very high mileage, a lot more than 55,000.

The car ran perfectly until about a couple of months ago. First I got a CEL with catalytic converter codes (P0420 and P0430) and about a month later the timing belt failed.

I know this is an old post, but I'm in the same predicament. I have a 2007 pilot 4wd with a bad engine, and I found a j39z1 to put in it.
Did you get that to work and did you have any complications?
For a trouble free engine swap, it's best to find an exact match. As mentioned in post #4, there are significant differences between the two. Putting an engine with VCM in a vehicle that never had this function I doubt will work. Nor will the wiring harness match the engine.
