Driver assist systems cannot operate

Hi,
I made our first longish drive to Portland today from Seattle. Pilot calculated around 25 mileage, though my calculation gave me around 22 . So I guess that was nice.

It was chilly, with freezing rain. I was enjoying my drive, and then it happened. I was at around the speed limit on I-5, and suddenly my console started showing all kinds of orange warnings.

The major warning was 'Some Driver assist systems cannot operate'. I also saw collision mitigation not working alert, and My Adaptive Cruise Control suddenly disengaged. I was not sure what happened suddenly. My guess was that some radar/sensor might have got water etc. I fumbled with the switches and was able to toggle into classic cruise control mode.

At the next rest area, I quickly did some online research and somebody suggested me to check the HONDA emblem for icing. I checked, and sure enough, the Honda emblem was completely under a frozen ice sheet. I quickly cleaned the ice, and sure enough, the error went away. I was happy for having found a quick solution.

After around just 10 minutes of driving, it happened again! I saw all the errors and ACC disengaged, and the collision mitigation warning light turned on. This was embarrassing for me when I was showing off to my wife all the cool capabilities in my new Pilot :(

Have others on this forum experienced this issue? Is this system SO fragile to bad weather? If yes, perhaps a light heating element behind the emblem might have helped. I don't know, but this sensor solution seems to be a joke if within 10 minutes of bad weather the systems stop working. Any workarounds or fixes, apart from stopping every 15 mins to clean the ice in such weather?

I have attached image of my console at the time of error.

Edit: I have attached a picture of how almost how my Honda emblem looked like, when I had to clean the ice to make it work. This is not my own screenshot, but I searched the internet for a picture which looked very similar to how my situation was.

Maybe a coating of Rain-X might help.

Hey guys! You got it right, it has to do with a coat of snow/ ice on the radar behind the Honda shield or the camera near u the rear view mirror. Not much you can other then cleaning the emblem.. do not put rains or aquapel on the emblem.. I’m not sure it’s glass cover and most of those product won’t work on plastic, I’m not even sure they would not damage polymers so play safe and accept they won’t work on those days.... I can wrap my head ahead around the fact these are not heated surface that would prevent ice buildup but so is life....

Unfortunately, the microwave radar can’t distinguish snow from other solid objects. I just cancel the Collision Mitigation system by press the button on the left to the steeling column. My other cars’ front parking sensor will be triggered sporadically then flash and beep as well when driving in snow days. As long as we know what it is, not a big deal then.

I understand that heat is bad for electronics but based on outside temperature, perhaps if a controlled low heat heating element similar to that in the rear defroster could have been installed behind the Honda Emblem, it might have helped in such cases.

Might have been more cool if on cold days the car would have defaulted to heat the sensor, but Honda Link could communicate using smartphone Bluetooth the current weather forecast and then the car could have skipped the heat if freezing rain or snow was not in forecast. I know, this is just a wish in the wonderland for the moment :)

The only time I had false alarms in the snow other the sporadic car parked near a curb on my side ... is when snow had stuck to the sensor.. been driving in a hell of a snow storm during the holidays with collision mitigation system enabled and got zero false alarm... I just make sure to check it’s still clean every few hours... the pregnant wife needs to pee anyway...

To compound the problem, perhaps you've seen that Honda "H" emblems have sometimes been pried off by vandals, ostensibly as some sort of tribal decorative trophy. :15:

Previously this was an irritating nuisance :30:. Now, it has the potential to become expensive system damage.:cursin:
