Have 2017 ELX And would like to add courtesy lights in the door where the red gummy light is not sure if need wiring harness or maybe plug and play.

Take the red reflector off and see if there is a wiring harness there. If there is you are good, if not, then no you can't add courtesy lights as the wiring harness in the vehicle will not support plugging in the harness for courtesy lights.

My money is on not being able to add courtesy lights at this point as Honda uses different wiring harnesses for different models.

I read through all the previous threads regarding the addition of door courtesy lights. If the harness was in place and it was just plug & play, I would've considered it. However, that is not the case and it would be a major undertaking IMHO so I figured meh, not really worth it.

My X5 came with basic puddle lights, but I upgraded to BMW door light projectors, and they’re awesome. They replace the standard lights in the door, so if your X5 has them, you’re all set for an easy swap. If not, adding them is straightforward—they just pop into the existing wiring.
Cool story. Do you have a Honda Pilot?

If you'll still thinking about doing this, here is a really old post where just the wiring harness for Honda's illuminated door sill accessory was purchased (and not the entire door sill accessory) for a 2016 Pilot. Wiring The poster plugged that harness into the Pilot's factory installed accessory outlet in the dash per the accessory's instructions, and then spliced the added interior light wires into that accessory door sill harness. Thus no need to splice into other factory installed. It works. I did the same thing on my own '16 Pilot after seeing this post years ago. I didn't make my own post. Bought the wiring harness off HondaPartsNow as I recall. Not sure if that is available anymore, but it might be worth checking to see if it still is for the 2017 model year.
