I started getting this error message today. [Check Fuel Cap]
Yes - I always tighten Cap until I hear one click
I filled my Gas tank yesterday.

I also noticed that whenever I fill up the tank - I keep hearing a horrible water swooshing/running sound. It’s really annoying. And it doesn’t go away until gas reaches ¾ marks.

Anyone experienced this before. I really don’t have time to be visiting the service dept.

Just did the A1 service at college Park Honda. Now acceleration and pickup is tortoise speed.

Turn car off, open fuel cap, close fuel cap, and start the car. the message should go away then. sometimes it takes several starts/couple of days for the message to go away.

I have the swooshing noise too... but I'm not worried about it. just don't top off gas tank.

Hope that helps.

in the manual of my old '09 ( i havent read the '12 completely yet) it said to do at least 3 clicks or you will get an engine light on....

turn your car off. open the gas cap. put it back on 3 clicks. then restart the engine.

i am sure this is in the 12 manual....

Taking the fuel cap on/off and doing more clicks might help, but I doubt it. It might be a one-time glitch and if the problem isn't there anymore, it should reset, but it will take a few start/stop cycles before it does.

Assuming these simple things don't work, likely you have a leak somewhere in the fuel tank evap system. It's under warranty so I wouldn't screw around with it - let the dealer fix it.

I think the fuel sloshing noise is a well-known irritant and par for the course, but possibly something might be wrong with yours - depends on how bad it is. I doubt it is related to the check cap light you're getting. Again, something to discuss with dealer.

Thanks for all the useful feedback. I opened and re-tightened the gas cap with just one click.
The message disappeared after day one. I have always tightened with one-click since Oct 2011.
I suspect this is going to be a common problem similar with 2006 Pilot .

I will also stop topping off the Gas.

I had the same error today. Tried the things listed here and no go. I've only driven it to Starbucks and back today, hopefully a few more cycles and it will clear itself. I filled up with gas 3 days ago so I know it's not that??? Weird.
I agree with you. This is going to be a problem on the long run.

I always tighten the cap until it clicks. Honda Pilot 2006 had the same problem.

I also noticed that there is no internal cap inside the fuel tank neck like other Vehicles. So anyone can mistakenly drop a foreign object into the tank. It’s a bad design by Honda Engineers.

And the fuel swooshing sound is still there after each fill-up (no top-ups)

On my Honda vehicles, I've noticed that its really easy to misalign the gas cap when you put it on, which will cause it to go into "click mode" before it is actually well-seated on the fill port. And if that happens the "Check Fuel Cap" light comes on. I've mostly seen this on my 2002 CR-V, but I have noticed it on my 2012 Pilot once as well.

Bringing this back up.. I got this message day after filling up gas. I did the instructions posted here. "Check fuel cap" message went away. However, the follow day I see the CEL come on. I called the dealer and they said that the CEL might be related to the "Check fuel cap" message I saw the day before and that to do a start/stop at least 8 times (2-3 miles each time). The CEL should go away then.

I'll double check and take cap off/on (at least 3 clicks) again and make sure it is seated/aligned properly before I leave work today.

Any other thoughts?
