Center console rubber nipple

On the underside of the flip-up lid of the center console between the seats, toward the dash-board-facing end of the lid, there are two small rubber nipples which serve as cushions for the lid.

Recently the one for the driver's side went missing and it causes the lid to squeak when you rest your arm on it. I got a replacement from the dealer.

My problem is that I absolutely cannot install the thing! The nipple has a little cut area or collar in it and there is a hole in the lid where the collar seats. You just have to shove the nipple in there. Well, it sounds simple, but the hole is just too damn small. I've tried twisting and pushing and prodding and poking and everything you can think of and it just won't go in that damn hole far enough to pop in there and stay.

Has anyone else had to replace one of those and how did you do it? Any ideas? I'm going to dip the thing in oil next.

If it is hard to put it in place, you must had awful lots of force to lose the original one.

Try a plastic like grocery bag push in the hole from the other end, wrap the bud with it then push the rubber and pull the plastic to see if it works.

Oddly enough, I just noticed my console lid is missing one too. I put a small adhesive 'bump-on' in it's place, but one of these days I'll order a replacement.

If you do decide to lube it, don't use a petroleum-based lube like Vaseline or oil. They will eventually cause the rubber to deteriorate. Use silicone lube instead, as you would on the door gaskets.

Ok, I used a couple of drops of liquid dish soap on the nipple and I broke a sharp round toothpick so I wouldn't be using the sharp end, but a more blunt surface (so I wouldn't pierce the rubber nipple) and was able to seat the nipple very easily. Thanks for the advice, and if this ever happens to you, don't try to just shove it or twist it in without some lubrication and a very small tool to help. Giggity, giggity!!! :D
