2017 Elite, Adaptive Cruise Control not working properly

Hello! I've got a problem that I haven't been able to find anyone else talking about.

My 2017 Pilot Elite's adaptive cruise control (ACC) doesn't work quite right.

Works fine when the road is straight, or when road veers left (the system "sees" the car in front), but if the road veers right the Pilot's sensors lose the car in front. This situation is easy to track with the filled-in vs. outlined car symbol in the instrument cluster. And the system behaves the same no matter what follow distance is set.

And when I say it loses the car when the road veers right, it's not even much to the right and the system can't "see" the car in front anymore. Just a slight bend in the road and the system loses the lead car. It wouldn't be an issue except that many times I have the ACC set speed higher than the speed the cars are traveling, so when the road veers right and the system loses sight of the car, the Pilot immediately accelerates! And if the road continued to sweep right my Pilot would eventually rear end the car in front. (I know this will never happen of course because I would hit the brake/cancel ACC, but I think it's still a basic safety issue nonetheless).

Also, I know how ACC should work because I also have a 2013 Accord Touring with an older version of the system that works beautifully!

My local dealer has stated they've adjusted the ACC sensors in the Pilot, but of course no difference at all, the system doesn't work.

Has anyone else noted a problem like this with their Pilot? Am I the only one? I generally love my Pilot but this ACC issue is infuriating. Note I also have the cracking/popping speakers issue, but resolved that with the A/C relay replacement. And I know I should be glad that I don't have any of the other myriad issues that people report here (like transmission stuff, etc).

What to do? Thanks!

No you are certainly not the only one! I'm taking my 2017 back to the dealer for the second time tonight hoping they can fix the darn thing. It not only "loses" the car ahead like you are describing but the speed is unsteady - varying sometimes by 5 mph - and it often will come up behind a car at speed and then hit the brakes, slow down, and then do it again. I wish I could turn off the system and just have a normal cruise control but it won't run without the adaptive feature.

What makes it more frustrating is that the ACC in my wife's Forester works so smoothly. Why can't Honda manage to do that?

Thank you! I'm glad (but not glad) that I'm not the only one. Did your system get fixed by the dealer? I have a case file open with American Honda, but all they want me to do is go back to the dealer for another "calibration/adjustment", which I know won't fix squat.

Once the Accord and Pilot are run into the ground, these will likely be my last Honda/Acura vehicles.

ACC is not smooth enough for my liking. And I thought the only way I could use cruise control was with ACC on. But not true! You can actually disable ACC and use traditional (i.e. standard) cruise control. Didn't know this until the I read the manual. I guess they're good for something once in a while, haha!

I have the exact same problem that Mazer75 describes with our 2017 Pilot. it's as if the camera has "tunnel vision" and looses sight of the vehicle in front when turning the slightest bend. I purchased a 2017 CR-V several months before buying this Pilot, and the Honda Sensing on the CR-V is perfect. It's what made me convinced to upgrade our Pilot. But the added cost to buy an Elite has been a disappointment. Has anyone solved this issue? I will be scheduling an appointment with my dealership with the next few weeks, but I have a bad feeling that they will find no issues.

We have 2017 Elite AWD and adaptive cruise is poor. It usually gets too close to the car it is following , then slams on brakes. If you move to adjacent lane, it is slow to get back to set speed. Occasionally it works as it should. Does not seem to matter what type vehicle we are following, or the range setting, which I usually leave on 2. Dealer does not know how to fix. I have had 3 other cars with adaptive cruise control, and they all worked very smoothly. We keep the H emblem clean, thinking that would help. I thought it needed a software upgrade, but dealer says none is available. We purchased car new.

Does anyone know if the brake lights light up when the ACC slows you down? I have had mine hit the skids pretty aggressively in a few situations on open interstate where someone cuts in front of me (not even closely), and clearly pissed off some people behind me. Not sure if they were annoyed at the aggressive decrease in speed or the needless slamming of the brakes. Or both!

My 2016 does the exact same thing under ACC. It is frustrating to say the least. If it uses radar it seems to me that all that needs to be done is just adjust it a degree or two to the right and it would solve the following problem. I had my windshield replaced yesterday as it had a few cracks. Hoped resetting the “safety systems” would have solved the issue but no luck. Does anyone know if the radar can be physically adjusted?

Yes, I paid an additional $471.00 for the OEM glass at Safelite. They did “the safety system recalibration”. It wasn’t working right before the glass replacement so that’s why I’m questioning the radar. It just loses “sight” of a car that is just barely moving right of center but will follow a car turning left easily. It’s embarrassing because when it loses sight and your cruise control is set slightly faster than the car you are following now your car speeds up and then jams on the brakes because it just “saw” the car again…. Frustrating. Had a 2016 Toyota Avalon and it worked perfectly.

I have the same problem, but my car seems to be cross-eyed. When I use it, it will always slow down for vehicles in the lane to my right not in front of me. I can have 2 miles of straight flat road and two lanes, if there's another car in the right lane as I go to pass, it'll slam the brakes on. Because of this I hardly ever use cruise control. Is there a way to DIY the camera back to center?
