I searched the forums and I'm consolidating a bunch of different thread info, as I couldn't find everything I need for this Generation.

Experience:
2013 EX with 125k mi has shown the CEL and Flashing D a few times over the last couple months, but they would go away after the next start-up.
On a recent road trip travelling highway and in stop and go traffic, the CEL and Flashing D came on and stayed on. I noticed it would not shift past 4th gear, so the final 80 miles were driven below 60-ish mph to keep the RPMs below 3k. I hooked up a code reader when I got home and these were the codes that popped up

Pertinent maintenance history:
I have been doing ATF D&F's every 10k mi with Valvoline MaxLife starting around 60k mi.

Symptoms:
  • Check Engine Light
  • Flashing D dash indicator
  • Codes P0847 & P0118
  • Won't shift past 4th gear

I believe I need to replace the 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch and will follow with a ATF D&F.

Image is from www.alldiscountparts.com :

Parts:
11 = 28600-R36-004 (Pressure Switch 2/4 clutch) (shown as A & C)
12 = 28610-R36-004 (Pressure Switch 3rd clutch) (shown as B)
17 = 90471-PW7-A00 (Gasket Washer)

I read these are to be torqued to 14 ft-lbs.

I need some help to identify which switch is for the 4th clutch (A or C)? And if you notice any errors in what I wrote, please correct me.

Much thanks for helping!

Per the workshop manual:

-- The P0847 DTC is for Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch B (3rd Clutch) Circuit Low, and causes the blinking D indicator.

-- The P0118 is Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor 1 Circuit High Voltage. This one sets the MIL Malfunction Indicator Light (Check Engine Light)

Assuming that your parts diagram is correct in its letter assignment, that's a relatively easy sensor to change. Others with more direct experience should comment in the thread if the diagram letter designations for the sensors are not accurate.

The second DTC might be set if you have a VCM disable device that was installed with engine warm. Depends some on where you found the code -- current or stored/historic. Were it mine, I would reset that while engine is cold, and see if it reappears. The sensors are on the water manifold where the radiator hoses connect. It would also be a good idea to carefully disconnect and clean the connectors to those sensors, and make sure they are completely dry before reassembling. Did you have any signs of engine overheat? The DTC symptom is of a poor connection or failed sensor, but might also trigger an engine overheat indication plus high cooling fans speed.

P0847 is not a reason for a drain and fill. The shop manual specifically calls it out as NOT a mechanical problem. It’s an electrical code and is almost always caused by a bad 3rd gear pressure switch. Had the same thing happen on ours. New sensor for about $75 and 30 minutes under the car. All good 2.5 years later without reoccurrence.

sounds fun. are you the original owner and do you know if the transmission software has ever been updated? the last time mine was at the dealer getting the main software updated because of an EGR code and they also updated the trans software at the same time. I noticed the trans shift a lot better ever since.
