2007 Pilot throwing PO420, need help

Greetings all. I've been browsing this site for some time over the years with great results due to your troubleshooting. I'm glad to be able to post here now, as we love the Pilot, and plan to purchase a 2nd one this year.

Long story short, I have been getting intermittent P0420 codes for the past month, without any drive ability changes. Our current Pilot is my wife's car so she is freaking out about the Engine Light.

At first we assumed it was bad gas, because we had a lot of rain the week it started, and I had her fill up with premium from a different station, which helped the light stay off. It keeps coming back on however, and also shows a P/D (pending) PO420 as well.

I want to try and change the Bank 1 02 sensor, something I have done before in our CR-V with good results in the same situation, but I am finding conflicting part numbers.

Without getting under the car and physically taking the downstream sensor off, I'd like to zero in on the correct replacement.

I have seen several part sites that list all this "generic" stuff, which I refuse to use in this situation. The factory part number I am seeing most is the NTK 36542-RJA-004. However I also see a Denso part that's half the price (The CR-V uses Denso sensors) at 2344368.

Has anyone replaced one of the downstream sensors and used something other than the original, and could someone verify for me the exact OEM genuine replacement part I'd need in this situation? This should be Bank 1 lower, the one that's monitored.

I've already read several posts regarding total cat replacements due to this code, I really hope I'm not in that boat, yet. Being that all i have is the 1 bank showing up, and haven't seen the 2nd, i am really leaning towards a faulty sensor.

Any clarification is much appreciated!

Go to the Bernardi Honda website, put your VIN # in and you will have access to the part numbers.

If you think the sensor is the problem, and the part numbers are the same, you can swap the bank 1 and bank 2 downstream sensors. If the sensor is bad, your P0420 code should become a P0430 (Bank 2)

If the p0420 code persists after swapping the sensors, (as I believe it might) you will have proven the sensors are good, and the catalytic convertor is in need of replacement.

By the way, bank 1 is the one closer to the firewall. Bank 2 is near the radiator.

The guts of the sensors are identical. Its the length of the wires, location of the clips, and possibly the shape of the connector thats different.

If the connectors are the same, and you can manage to have enough length to reach the harness connector, you could swap them temporarily as a test.
