Hi,
I have a 2WD 2006 Pilot that needs a new ABS module and I'm looking to find out if I can use the ABS module from an Acura TL. The Pilot and the TL both use the same module, part number STWA0. I'm planning to take the Pilot to a dealership to have the module reprogrammed after I install it.
Obviously swapping with the Acura part isn't ideal, so a bit more on the "why".
I have been having issues with the driver side rear wheel on my Pilot intermittently locking up. This would happen when the car was parked; I would start the car and try to drive, finding the wheel was locked. Initially, I replaced the brake caliper on that wheel, but the problem persisted. I later figured out that stopping the engine and restarting it would resolve the issue for a few engine starts, so I suspected the ABS module.
Several weeks later I found that the Pilot seemed sluggish when driving and figured out that the driver's rear wheel brake was heavily dragging. I loosened the "RL" brake line fitting at the ABS module (part #STWA0) proving that the ABS valve was holding pressure in the line.
On my first attempt to replace the ABS module, I ordered a used ABS module on EBay for an AWD Pilot knowing that I couldn't use the part directly. The 2WD modules were going for $500, while the AWD modules could be had for $50. The thought was to swap in the ABS ECU module onto the hydraulic block from the donor AWD module. As it turns out, the ECU can't be removed from the hydraulic block on the 2006 model year. There are two security Torx screws buried inside of the ECU and under the circuit board. Based on this the 2006 ABS isn't serviceable, which is why I haven't found any rebuild shops offering them.
For round two I found on Ebay a $80 ABS module from a 2007 Pilot with part number STWA0. Too good to be true, of course, and instead I received a box filled with bottles of dish soap approximating the weight of an ABS module.
Figuring that I'm better off getting scammed out of $100 instead of $500, I have found several ABS modules with the STWA0 part number that have been removed from Acura TL's. The TL is 2WD like my Pilot and I'm planning to have the VIN coded by the dealership. Thoughts on whether this would work?
Thanks
Mike
