actually, he got an oatmeal shampoo today. Contemplated Zaino Z6 "gloss enhancer", but smell was too "perfumy" for a guy dog.

Bernese Mountain Dog. They originate in Switzerland as a working dog. Bred to help farmers and merchants pull carts of produce, etc. He's a little over 100 pounds. Not sure he'd care much for the climate in Hawaii. He's pretty much a slug in the summer.

How is he around kids? I've wanted one for years but my wife won't let me get a second dog until the kids get older.

Does he shed a lot? How is he in winter?

Oh, yea. Great Pilot. Black was my second choice behind Redrock!

yes he shed, or molts is more like it. Absolutely fantastic with kids (have a 3 1/2 yr old and 10 mo. old). We had the greatest Golden Retriever b4 and weren't ready for another, so we went with this breed. Bernese are advertised as having same disposition, but they are not. There are personality differences between Sporting (golden) and Working (berners) dogs. While we love Henry, would probably lean towards Golden again next (Henry is only 1 1/2 yrs). Lots of work as a puppy and is not always comfortable around strangers - particularly men. The breed is rather "aloof". Loves the winter/snow, and lays low in the summer. As with any dog, research the breed and the breeder well. There are significant characteristic differences between male/female with this breed. Bernese Mtn dogs are tough too find. Thanks for the info. Our current dog is 8 and she has several great years left so it will be a while.

We have more in common - our other vehicle is also a 2001.5 Passat - turbo wagon with 5-speed!

its important to maintain at least one 5spd in the family (IMHO). You no doubt utilize the www.vwvortex.com site as well. Look into the Bernese at the appropriate time.

Again I have to comment on how beautiful she is ... you're right I am sure she wouldn't care much for the climate of Hawaii ... Perhaps when we get back to the East coast ... oh ... and ... the PILOT looks great too ...
