Back when I rode motorcycles, all riders would wave to each other when they passed on the road. Then, a few years ago, I had a Jeep Wrangler, and, again, all other Wrangler owners would wave to me. I guess in each case, I belonged to a sufficiently distinctive demographic that members of the group would recognize each other and acknowledge our mutual identity. Tell you the truth, I thought it was neat, and I made sure to respond to all waves on the road.
Then I sold the Wrangler and bought a Subaru Forester. Try as I might, after nearly two years of ownership, I have not been able to get a single Forester owner to wave back. Foresters are fairly distinctive in their rather funky looks, and have an active owner's group, but no luck. In fact, I get such blank stares from passing Forester drivers, that I know they have not the slightest clue why I am waving. They don't even recognize that I am driving the same car that they are. The only reaction I get is hysterical laughter from my wife in the passenger seat.
It occurs to me that there are two requirements for waving. First, the owner must have sufficient interest in their wheels, so that an encounter with another will spark recognition of that fact. Second, the owner must feel a common bond sufficient to outwardly acknowledge its very existence. I see the elements of both on this board.
In short, will Pilot drivers wave?
