Want to find out why people aren't using the <a href="/kb_list.php">knowledge base</a>. It's been very popular on the <a href="http://www.acuramdx.org">acuramdx.org</a> site. The main idea is that once you post a problem, members can acknowledge the fact that they have the same issue. The count is maintained, and if this board is monitored by Honda, a TSB might be issued. It also allows members to share their resolutions.

With the discussion forum of Problems I think most people are just gravitating there instead of the knowledgebase. I admit it, I'm lazy and didn't really know it existed.:32:

In the know.

OK, I checked it and added to it. I also registered under one of the other problems...I found an issue. 1. My dealership was not listed - Frederick Honda or Hershey, PA; 2. The models are the MDX models [base, touring, touring w/ navi] instead of the Pilot models.

I can't figure out how to get to the knowledge base. The apparent link at the top of the page does not work (actually, none of them do), nor does the link that you provided in the first post in this thread (my browser locks up every time I try it).

Any other suggestions???

I'm guessing it's probably Netscape. It seems Netscape has quite a few bugs in it that interfere with some webpages. I suggest using Internet Explorer.

Speaking from experience on the MDX site, I can tell you that the kbase becomes and invaluable resource as time goes by.

The Problems Forum is appropriate to identify & discuss problems and their solutions. The challenge is that 6 months from now, the "my glovebox rattles" thread will drop into oblivion. Newbies (or people with a similar problem that is just appearing) will do a search (if we're lucky and they don't start a new thread) -- and it'll turn up multiple threads.

The kbase is a great repository for the problem+resolution in a single place. It provides a link to the discussion(s) if the owner is inclined to see all the Sherlock Holmes in action :)

For example, on the first-year MDXs, there was a suspension "thud" going over bumps. Several seperate threads and hundreds of posts ensued. If you newly acquired the thud on your car, would you rather read through the several threads and hundreds of posts, or just go to the single entry in the kbase that says "Suspension Thud" as the problem and has a couple of bullets for the solution?

I'd suggest making entries into the kbase when a potential resolution is actually found (sometimes the resolution is "it's normal" - like with the wind buffeting/roof vibe thread). Posting a problem without a resolution in the kbase begs for discussion on how to fix -- and the kbase isn't good for that (it's not set up for threaded discussions, and people don't check it daily) -> that's what the forums are for.

OK, off the soapbox :)

Re the links not working, I'm using Netscape 4.x (and routinely access the site from several different machines).

Actually, I just realized that this particular machine also has Netscape 6.2 installed, so I accessed the site using 6.2 and the top of page links work fine, including the Knowledge Base.

The top of page area looks different with Netscape 6.2 than it does with 4.x -- I wonder why that is?

In any case, it appears that the problem is with Netscape, not the site. Thanks for your help.

Well, the problem is that the site uses HTML that only IE and Netscape 6+ recognize. That's not a Netscape problem. It's the fact that this site (which I love anyway) uses HTML that only some browsers recognize. I posted this problem in the "software"
area of the forum and I don't think I've seen a response.
It's not hard to make the pages recognize what browser you are using, and provide a simpler version of the links at the top, for example, for those using Netscape <6.

Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine; I'm a software engineer writing web software, and very conscious of the fact that more and more people assume that everybody has Microsoft's version of things!

Sorry. (Flame off.)

Oh, and the reason I didn't use the KBase is that the link doesn't work in Netscape (4.x) which I use more often than IE. The cute corners of the graphics on the main page don't work in Netscape either; only IE. Getting to the forums is tricky w/o IE, too, but I found a few links that *do* work in Netscape and routinely use those.

<excuse>Well, I'm a software engineer as well  , that's why I was so busy with other things and purposely overlooked the non-IE issue </excuse>

This is now my priority. Stay tuned for the fix.

Ok, here is the problem. Netscape doesn't actually crash. It just takes a LONG time (and a lot of CPU cycles) to render these pages. The reason - too many nested tables. Since I don't have the time to redesign the entire site and remove nested tables, I'll have to officially declare this site "optimized for IE" . Can't believe Nestcape's such poor performance.

All of the pages on this site (except for forums) are broken down into small components to maximize reusability, thus they heavily rely on nested tables.

Yes, the LOOOOONG time to load is a different problem.
I posted that a while back. Thanks for figuring out why.
So yes, that's a Netscape problem, I'd say.

But can you put some links at the top of the pages
(where the white ones are: home, forums, chat, etc...)
that work in Netscape? That would make things much more
usable. And might get more hits on the kbase.

THANKS

Beth
