I found the thread for the 2006s, but no general thread on 2007s.

I've been offered $32,067 on a 2007 AWD with RES. Is that good?

I would say that is a very good deal, just traded a '03 Pilot EXL-RES on a '07 EXL-RES and my allowance was $19,500. Figured I got about $2,500 off invoice and $17K for the trade. The other dealer in town would match the trade at $17K but help at full MSRP on the '07 and said he had plenty of people willing to pay close to MSRP on the new models.

I just pulled the trigger today on an '07 Pilot 4WD EX-L w/RES.

I paid $32,042 for the vehicle, which includes the destination charge. So, it is not too far off from invoice. I got online quotes from several dealerships, but they were all coming in between $33K and $33.9K. One seemed more willing than the others to deal and that is the one that the deal was cut with. Though, when I got to the showroom to sign the paperwork and pay, I almost walked out. They tried to pull a "the salesman was not authorized to give that price" routine :3:, but yielded when I refused to go any higher than what was agreed via email. Having copies of the emails back and forth in hand helped.

I paid $1,911 for accessories, which include towing package, crossbars, rear splash guards, all season mats, air deflector, cargo tray, cargo cover, and wheel locks. That price includes installation.

Beware, that the "trailer hitch" accessory listed on the Honda website is just that, a hitch. If you want the wiring and extra ps and tranny coolers, you will pay significantly more. I would have gotten an aftermarket hitch and wiring harness, but I did not want to mess with the coolers. The quotes that I got on the whole towing package ranged from $1,236 to $1,411 installed. With all of the other options included, $1,911 seemed like a good deal.

I got the 7yr/100K HondaCare warranty for $1,051, but only after I showed them the online quote from Bernardi Honda. I thank this forum for letting me know about the cheaper online rates!:4:

Paid $30,800 for a 2007 EX-L Out of the Door (includes destination, tax, tags, title & appearence package (pin stripes, rear mud guards).
Is that for a 2WD or 4WD? What was just the price+destination? It is hard to compare since taxes and tag costs vary widely by where you live.

Folks, when we post 'prices paid' it really helps other Pilot buyers if you include the following as individual line items:

Model, Trim, NAV/RES, 2WD or 4WD
Condition/miles on the new Pilot
Amount paid for the Pilot
Amount for any non-government fees such as a 'document processing fee'
Amount for add-ons like a hitch, etc
Amount over/under KBB trade in value for any trade in
HondaCare warr terms and price if you purchased it
Anything else that might effect the deal

This way people can use your experience when applying it to their own purchase.

If you divide by 1.032 to remove the tax, that would be below invoice (...this not even accouting for tag, processing, title, and app pkg)

Yes, I got it below invoice. I had received the following quote from a different dealer (in MD):

Following is a quote for a 2007 Pilot EX-L 4WD
Sale Price: 29,175
Destination Charge: 595
Processing Fee: 100
VA Tax 3%: 896.10
VA Tags: 83.50
Overall Total: 30,849.60

I took this quote to another dealer (in VA, from whom I bought the car) and he beat it by $50 (gave me $30,800 on road). In VA,the processing fee is $299 - $399 (this dealer was $399) and tax is 3.2% Had all colors in stock and I selected Aberdeen Green Metallic.

2007 Pilot EX-L 4WD (No RES/NAV)
3 Miles on delivery
Total paid (on road) $30,800 (Base+Dest+Tax+Tags+Processing)
No Add-Ons, No Extended Warranty Purchase
Processing Fee $399
Got Pinstripes, Rear Splash Guards, Door-Edge Guards, Fenderwheel Trim, and Wheel Locks (I think everything except Pinstripes & Rear Splash Guards comes standard with the EX-L)

THAT'S good information! Thanks for going to the trouble to break it down.

Wow, they gave you a hefty portion of the holdback........

Holdback is 3% of MSRP - that's about right, I don't have the numbers in front of me any more.
According to Consumer Reports, for a '07 EX-L 4WD (No RES/No NAV) the invoice price is $30,530 and the holdback is $997, so the CR "bottom line price" is $29,533 + packages/options.

So I've been wondering (having gotten what I thought was a great deal this summer, though others have done much better):

When dealers sell for invoice minus incentives (if any) minus holdback, what are they making? Is there enough in the "processing/documentation fee"? Do they just hope to make something on accessories, extended warranty, or future service business? Is it possible that they take a loss?

It seems like people have often gotten inexplicably good deals, even given all the information we knew (not necessarily on '07's yet, but certainly on '06's).

There is an anonymous dealer on the MDX site who posted net costs of the 2006 MDXs. They were invoice minus the holdback minus the incentive.

So they are not making much at all. They hope to then talk you into the extended warranty/undercoating/etc. If that doesn't work, then they just try to make it up on the next uninformed customer (and there are many more uninformed people than there are informed people). If you finance through them, then they get to keep a small percentage. Their allocation is also based on what they sell, so sometimes they just need to move vehicles to keep their allocation. Dealers also finance the cars on the lot (holdback is supposed to cover that), so if a vehicle is on the lot for a long time, then finance costs can become greater than holdback reimbursement and they can start losing money on the vehicle.

Our local Acura dealer is advertising on TV for new 2006 MDX's for $32,990. New 2006 TL's are going for $29,990. Both are very good prices.

With the current $2500 rebate, MDX net costs are:

Net Cost on Premium-30465.64

Net Cost on Touring-32923.54

Net Cost Touring with DVD-35472.11

Net Cost Touring w/ Nav-35316.18

Net Cost Touring w/ NAv/DVD-36621.25

The problem for me is that the $2500 rebate ends on Oct 31. I need to do my deal in Jan and I doubt that there will be any 06 MDX's around. Also, residual for 06 MDX compared to 07 Pilot MAY lead to higher lease payment for MDX (haven't run any numbers, so don't know).
