What navigational system is Honda using in 2023 for the pilot?

Previous years was Garmin which has been very good. We are looking at buying a new pilot in April and were wondering if anyone knows if they are still using the Garmin navigation system?

We rugged Trailsport owners don't need Navi or nice stereos. Apparently.

(I use Apple Maps or Waze, and find the OEM Honda stereo quite reasonable, to be fair.)
If I had not paid extra for the trim with Navigation I would not be so frustrated...if they are not going to support what they sell they should not sell it!!!
Dude it is common knowledge that factory NAV systems suck balls vs what is currently state of the art for Carplay or Android Auto.

Everyone's advice will be to spend 50 bucks on a dang basic Android phone or a used iphone and then have a very good system on your Pilot. You are hell bent on complaining about a system that is known to suck and you could have easily tested it out before you bought the car to see if it indeed did suck, and you didn't. And you have a very easy solution.

This reminds me of the very specific complainers like "bahhhhh I have 2700 CDs and Shame On You Honda for not including a 6 disc CD player in a 2023 automobile to cater to my very old fashioned and specific need even though if I really wanted to I could buy a portable CD player and hook it in but No I Would Rather Complain That Honda hasn't Met My Specific Need"

Wow, people are being a bit rough on this poor guy. Unless he lives out in the middle of nowhere, I would certainly expect factory nav to at least have all the roads (if not the specific points of interest) within a year of them going in. Perhaps HERE has a way to advise them of new roads and POIs on their website...?
I get it. It should work and should work well considering the price of a car now or at least give us the option to replace it with an aftermarket. The downside of aftermarket now is a lot of the features for the cars is imbedded into the infotainment system.

I’m one that bought the Elite trim for its other features but not for its Nav because we new, functionally for us we are submerged into the Apple eco system, CarPlay with Apple Maps is better and more integrated to our lifestyle. Navigation was not even a factor in choosing our Elite Trim. It’s familiar and now that it’s wireless it’s even more convenient. The old family Subaru nav was mediocre and the fact is you can load up destination in Maps prior to getting on the road made us go away from the in car nav. Also, after a few years we lost the free updates for the nav. For us why even start if you will be losing it and going to your smartphone anyway. I’m not renewing a mediocre product subscription for navigation. A week ago I tried to use the nav to see how it did, my wife looked at me like I was crazy...and proceeded to press CarPlay. Aye, Aye, Ma'am.

I hid the "NAV" app on my Pilot when streamlining the screens. I don't even want its icon cluttering my life. Android Auto for me.

I clicked on NAV last night just for fun. What a joke. Looked like I was transported back to some Acura from 1999 or something.

They didn't even bother putting NAV in any of the new Accords, even the top trim. Everyone carries a fully up to date NAV system in their pocket these days. I guess unless you choose to carry a Jitterbug flip phone

I think it's this:

the new navigation system SUCKS!!! it does not have half of the addresses I put in and it does not understand what you say and Honda says that cant help me!!! DO NOT BUY
It is not GARMIN
IT Is not Garmin...whatever it is it SUCKS!!! Honda says there is no update and I am very frustrated...many addresses are not in the system...
is it a 2023 Pilot? I have a touring and it is not a garmin...the new map sucks
Four weirdly aggressive posts in a row with CAPITALIZATION that's all over the place and repeating that it SUCKS in three of them and that it's not Garmin in the last three. The first one would've been fine-ish; we all get frustrated about things, but having to wade through repeated posts like that makes people tired and less likely to want to help, especially when it's revealed that part of the problem is that they're apparently Leroy Jethro Gibbs from NCIS and still have a flip phone. I bet people wouldn't have been dunking on that last part if it had just been that first post, aggressive though it may be.

It's fine that this person has a flip phone even. I get it, wear your tinfoil hat, the government cant track me with a flip phone.... PRIVACY! Right?

All joking aside, the problem isn't the phone. The problem is the lack of accountability. I'm not sure why Honda is getting the blame for putting in what every other manufacturer does, a bare bones nav system, and there was, even admitted in his post, not enough due diligence done before purchasing. If this was the ONE thing that made you spend more money above another trim, you should have spent a LOT of time weeding through it to make sure it lived up to your apparently ridiculous high standards.

I'm sorry, but this is one of those hard lessons in life that you'll have to live with and there's no sympathy to be had when it's 100% the fault of the consumer.

Agree w/Blair & MrFurious

The poster just reeks of old curmudgeon who is unwilling to try anything new and then rants and raves about things not working. Garmin? My Dad used to drive around with a Garmin and one of those sandbag-base holders on his dashboard and it worked quite well. But that was in 1997 or something.

Smartphones bring lots of problems and distractions to our world, however in my opinion Google Maps is one of, if not THE, killer app in smartphones. Incredibly useful, up to date, keeps getting better.

Easy there, I was still using my Garmin in my 2018 Crosstrek until I got an unlimited plan…it’s still in my Ascent still come to think about it….😂

Lol, I still have that Garmin sand bag stand. Along with an iPhone 13. The Garmin hasn't been out of the house in a long time.

Maybe the Nav market is changing in the future? Just read that GM is going Tesla's route and not having CarPlay in their Blazer beginning in 2024. They claim a lot of their new driver assistance features are tightly coupled to navigation. The Blazer is first up and more to come. Tesla and Rivian are two that don't have support for CarPlay. I wonder how their Nav are?

What is their logic for not including CarPlay? Some "we are too cheap to pay Apple" thing? Or you're saying that they have some full Knight Rider car comes to me automatically thing and thus they need their own nav system and won't trust Carplay?

I guess so. Google is working on their navigation system. “According to Mike Hichme, executive director of GM'S "digital cockpit experience," the carmaker has "a lot of new driver assistance features coming that are more tightly coupled with navigation" and won't be "dependent on a person having a cellphone."

I have a 2023 Pilot Elite, the dealer assures me the GPS is a Garmin. I have had probably 6 or 7 automobile GPS, and one on my motorcycle. This is by far the worst GPS I have ever had. It is hard to see when in use, since the letters on the map are white with a very thin black outline, against a light gray map background. It is harder to program than my previous 2017 Pilot Elite, and it is terrible at routing. I was in a strange town a couple weeks ago, and the GPS in routing us to our motel took us 8 miles out of the way. When I got to the motel, I tried it again, and it wanted us to go 4 miles up the Interstate and 4 miles back, all this while sitting in the motel parking lot. This is just one of many experiences. We have found that my iphone on car play has a much better experience. I can't imagine anyone would think this was a good product. We travel a lot, and this is a terrible product that is a great disappointment.

I don’t know why people still trust what dealers say. They know about as much as the brochure says and whatever they don’t have committed to memory, they will make up to get you to ink the deal.

EDIT: Here’s some info.

Wow what a steaming pile of horse **** this is! Look at the dates on some of the applicable files. I get it that using CarPlay or Android Auto is best (and that's what I do when a vehicle is so equipped), but seeing this makes me want to just say "Shame on you Honda!" I wonder how much more per vehicle it would have cost for a Garmin-based system? Whatever the number, the answer is, more than they were willing to spend.

As for what people at the dealers know, sometimes they don't even know the stuff in the brochure.
