So my friends 2014 pilot had trouble starting last week. Today she started the car and she had a CEL along with the VTM-4 light and the traction control light on steady.

She took it to the dealership and they said there was a code p0303 which is misfire in cylinder 3. but they recommended replacing piston rings for cylinders 1-3 along with the rear head gasket and the front and rear valve cover gaskets. Is this necessary?

They also found a leak in the steering rack. Could all this have caused the lights? Does it look like the dealership trying to do work thats not required?

The exact diagnostic:

OTHER: found code P0303 stored, also found that the spark plug had alot of carbon build up.
replace the piston rings on cylinders 1-3, replace the rear head gasket, and the front and rear
valve cover gaskets

There are two other issues, such as steering rack and replace trailing arms bushing. I'm not worried about these at the moment.

Can you provide the diagnostic report that the dealer technician (or more likely service writer) wrote? It would be helpful to know what other type of tests they performed beyond reading the diagnostic codes.

Welcome @engineerjet ...could be worth the trouble to get a second opinion. Depending upon how severe the leaks from the PS rack or valve covers are that could wait until the CEL is resolved. The rear head gasket and misfire sounds troubling.
