Verbatim;
Hey fellow Canuk here from Ottawa area. We've got a 2013 Honda pilot and started having vibration/ eco disengaging issues this winter. Was following your posts on and off on the site about your ECO disabler. Any info on how I can purchase one and cost? Does it require adjustments or is it self adjusting? Thanks in advance.

I ended up putting the VCM Muzzler on my 2014 EX pilot and it seems to work quite well. I was getting and average of 19.9MPG before the modofication and now after 1,800 miles I'm getting 20MPG. So I actually saw a slight improvement in MPG.

Now the interesting thing. I was driving past my Honda dealership yesterday and stopped in for a free carwash. The deal is that a salesman has to drive the car through the carwash. I like my salesman, bought 2 Hondas from him, and don't mind talking to him. I told him about the VCM modification I did and he told me that there is another way to do it. It seems that in some Honda vehicles, if you have the Honda factory electrical tow package wired, there is a plug that you can put in the receptacle that will make the vehicle think you are towing a trailer and the VCM will be disabled. He thought that it was available at Advanced Auto but I haven't been able to find it.

Any ideas about this?

Looking carefully at the connections diagrams for the factory tow package in the WSM, there's no apparent way for the PCM to know if there's a trailer connected. While it's possible that the MICU could be testing for current flow through the supply circuit through to the trailer lighting controller, there is no CANBUS connectivity to either the rear relay panel or the lighting controller back there.

If someone discovers a magic piece that can be purchased easily at an Advanced Auto, please share details here.

I've had a VCMuzzler installed since about 5k miles on the car, with nothing but good results. I was commuting for a couple weeks from just north of Los Angeles to a project at the south end of the central valley. Especially with the CC engaged, there was a lot of surging and extra shifting on the drive over the Grapevine on I-5. It couldn't be helping. Solved with the VCMuzzler. A few times, after sitting stopped in traffic for a while after a normal run, I'll see the ECO light on for a minute or two until airflow is restored or the cooling fans cycle on. Watching temp data on the datalogger, it seems that the cooling fans wait a bit to start, but quickly shut off as coolant temp drops again. Probably to cut down on annoying noise.

That salesman was referring to a way to trick the tow package on the Ford trucks to disable the auto start/stop curse (feature). Number one rule, never believe anything out of a salesman's mouth unless its in writing. Honda's VCM has no ties with towing packages.

Do you recall the efan “on” temp?
I do not, as it's been a while (more than a few years) since I drove regularly with the datalogger attached. The fans would come on somewhere north of about ECT 210º and not at a real consistent point. That leads me to believe that there's a time delay factor in deciding when the fans actually start. The issue only presents after some driving under load with good airflow, then a stop at a light in traffic.

Another observation from then is that ECT in the range of about 180º up to about 220º offers almost no change in gauge reading. It's apparent that Honda considers this a normal operating range and doesn't want to have drivers obsessing over gauge swings. They don't offer any scaling numbers on the gauge anyway, making it not much more than an "idiot gauge" for folks who think having a gauge will tell them about actual running temp trends; it doesn't.

The VCMuzzler has been on the car now for eight-plus years and a bit north of 50k, with absolutely no issues with the way it's been working. The car has had regular (2-3 years intervals) coolant changes, and will get another soon when I get around to installing a new timing belt and water pump. I'll install a new thermostat at that time too, just because.

Same as muzzler, only 1/4 of the price but you assemble. Sells them assembled for $20 more.
i just received one almost identical from eBay. It came with NO installation instructions. Can anyone send me some? I know it’s probably very simple. I just want to be sure I know the proper way. Thanks.

I just put the S-VCM on my 2015. I forget which one I had tried before, it was one of the cheaper ones that just used a fixed resistor. I ditched it because it lowered the temperature reading too much and it was setting check engine lights for running too cold. This one just seems to have lowered the temperature gauge only slightly, and so so far, no ECO light, no check engine light, and no shuddering. Might have been late in adopting it at 109,000 miles, but I'd rather not find out how long the motor mounts will last or how long before it starts burning oil.
