I would like to (eventually) increase the footprint on my Pilot without going too wide and exceeding the fender coverage, and most importantly no rubbing while turning etc. In other words a plug-n-play size that is aesthetically pleasing without creating problems.

I am currently running stock 245/50 R20 tires. I have used the tire size calculator at tiresize.com and it appears that a 265/45 R20 might just do the trick. Does anyone have any experience doing a modification like this? It appears the width goes from 9.6" to 10.4" and in my mind that does not seem too far-fetched to accomplish these goals(?) Is there a width that just does not work and I should be aware of?

MIght be different since you are just going wider and 1/4" smaller diameter. I have the 18" but went to 10.4" wide on a larger diameter. (265-60-18 from 245-60-18) I have a slight rub in them when backing up.

@Glenn54 did the same with aftermarket rims and experiences a lot more rubbing. See THIS thread.

Is your "rub" from the outside diameter or width? I compared your 265/60/18 against the 265/45/20 and the diameter of the 20in is just over an inch less. Widths are the same.

I think the combination of both and maybe shape/profile of tire/sidewall.

Same scenario comments on the Ridgeline forums from those that upsized to the 265-60-18. I don't know about those that went to smaller 17" rims with larger diameter tires if they have rub issues. I think @Flybox1 did that. I don't recall reading any that just went wider.

Turn the wheel all the way and get under to measure at inner fenderwell to see if you have the extra 1/2" space. Check after moving backward (and then forward)

Yes, I went to 17s (AT 265/65) and get very minor rub at wheel lock in reverse.
Depends on the tire. AT profile is much different that passenger tires.
Check clearance at full lock as sequoiasoon mentioned.
Spacers might help if there's a clearance issue as the inner fenderwall is more narrow than the outer.
