tape playback issue

Has anyone had a problem with the factory deck when it comes to tape playback? I've got a 2004 EX w/RES. When I fast-forward I can't get the deck to play back at normal speed, it sounds like I've got the Chipmunk's Greatest Hits going. Even if I eject the tape, play the other side, what ever. Sometime's it'll work after I turn the truck off then on again.
I know the easiest solution is to play cd's but my kids have their stuff too, and you know you can't listen to Elmo or Barney unless it's audiophile perfect.

Any comments?

Sounds to me like a defective tape deck. The service dept should swap it out for a new one (unless you really were listening to a Chipmunks greatest hits song... you never know) ;)

I have my favorites songs from when I was growing up on tape and played them a good part of the way up and back to Northern Georgia this past January with no problems.

I can't even remember when the last time I even played a cassette. I'll have to find one, dust it off and try.
Indeed. Come to think of it, why was a tape deck installed? If memory serves, Honda offered tape decks as an option on the '99 Accord we had and I'd have to look at the '01 Accord to see if there's one there. Tape deck, shmape deck!

Actually, I've gotten into some of my retro tapes that I don't have on CD. The problem I have with my deck is that I get an engine high pitched sound as the volume is turned up. As the engine changes gears and speeds, so does the pitch of the sound. Anyone else have this problem?:3: :3:

Granted I do not drive the Pilot much as it is my wife's car, but we do use the cassette player for our XM unit as a temporary measure, and we will occassionally listen to a book on tape. Personally, I would rather have both forms of media available at the head unit, as cassettes have not entirely been cast to the wayside (and I AM only 31).

Just to eliminate the obvious, but have you tried a different cassette tape? If it's doing Alvin & the Chipmunks for ALL of your tapes, then perhaps it's time to visit the ole service department and get the head unit looked at... :8:

Unless, of course, all of your tapes ARE Alvin & the Chipmunks. In that case it might be time to get your head unit looked at.:D

3 reasons for a tape player:
  1. Books on tape (though books on CD are finally getting out there)
  2. Old tapes/custom tapes you don't have on CD
  3. Cassette adapter that some people use to run their MP3 player, etc, through their speakers
    [/list=1]

I've used it for #1, made a couple long trips fly by. I wouldn't have asked for a tape player, but now I'm glad I have it.

  1. I just wanted to chime in here. I've thought of 3 really good reasons to have a cassette tape player.

    1) Books on tape (though books on CD are finally getting out there)

    2) Old tapes/custom tapes you don't have on CD

    3) Cassette adapter that some people use to run their MP3 player, etc, through their speakers

    :D

  1. I forgot about books on tape. I suppose they are the only reason, IMO, to have a tape deck.

Why? After all, I've still got a cassette player in my car!
ones you have the songs in a digital format you should be good to convert to other future formats as needed

For the love of God, I didn't mean to get all those panties bunched up over tapes vs cd's! To one of the the replies, yes, I've tried several tapes. I'm due for our first oil change soon so I'll have them look at this issue while it's there.
Now, what to do about that 8-track...

I use my tape deck in conjunction with my Roady XM radio (cassette adapter) and my tape deck went on the fritz this past Friday so your post was especially timely for me. I'm taking my Pilot in tomorrow to have it checked out as well. From what I can recall reading on this board it seems as though a few folks have had issues with the factory stereo in general.
