I just picked up a 2018 Touring and same thing. After a day of heavy rain, the cargo liner in the back (trunk area) was wet. Pilot at dealer today. I called Honda to register a complaint and they were the most UNHELPFUL people I have ever come across. They had the nerve to tell me "so, what would you like us to do about it...?

If anyone has any documentation that Honda is aware of this can they please post? I would like to call the dealer and let them know.

Thanks

Last night I looked around the trunk/cargo area and around the rubber lining to check for any indication that anything was sitting on it or blocking it, etc. - nothing. My cargo area is clean/dry BUT then again... we haven't had any rain here in Los Angeles. I've washed my Pilot a couple times with a pressure washer and I usually do open the trunk/cargo first to start drying and cleaning.

Only thing I can think of to test this is the next time I go wash it I won't open the trunk/cargo until I'm done and see if the bottom cargo carpet is wet?

Unfortunately, I have become a victim of this rear tailgate leak. After heavy rains yesterday, I'm getting my kids into the car today and for the very first time in my 2016 Pilot Elite, I look up at the liner of the rear panoramic moonroof and it is bulging like a water balloon. I check it and sure enough, it is hold probaby a gallon of water. I open the tailgate and pretty much looks very similar to videos in the this thread. I sent it to the dealership today and they are blaming it on "a puncture in the rubber seal around the moonroof window." I looked at that "puncture" and I don't see it. Now that I'm reading this thread, it sounds more like an issue with the rubber sealing of the trunk? Is that the agreement of all that have had problems. I'm hoping they look at the rear tail gate too.

Own this car for not even 3 years. I had the odometer adding miles to the car issue at the beginning when I just bought it. 2 years ago, it was stalling and automatically shut off while driving when the car would stay in idle too long and they had to replace the main computer, and now this BS. I have owned Hondas and Acuras and this car model is the worse.

The dealer reported I had a kinked drain line from my moonroof as to why there was water in the panoramic liner. Go figure. So far it is dry but current rains are not as heavy. But still dry.

Water filling up the lift gate underneath the glass and between the tailgate tail light. Once you open the lift gate water gushing everywhere. Didn't notice any water inside the car but will surely double check.
Don't know if this is the exact same issue, but I brought my 2016 Honda Pilot in today and the tailgate struts were leaking. I've had trouble opening and closing with and without the FAB, and have been complaining for almost 2 years. Haven't noticed any water inside because it's full in the back all the time, but will check. The struts will be replaced tomorrow by the dealership. Will ask them about the water issue and see if anything needs to be sealed.

I have a tailgate leak, I tried to clean my car using a normal water pressure from a hose, I found out that the rubber on top of the edge of the tailgate is big sufficient to cover the space causing water to rush into the opening of the side, once collected it comes out through the latch which eventually gets into the trunk carpet, 2017 pilot used to smell brand new now smells musty . Will bring it into the dealership , this is a design flaw which if not corrected will lead into a lemon because. Count how many times they tried to correct it by the dealership . They are aware of the flaws then why not correct it before selling ? Will see what they would say this Saturday.

I, too, am having this issue after rain

Hi, all.

I visited our local Honda dealership and they were unable to duplicate the issue...even though the rear cargo carpet was damp when I left. They are going to replace the entire door seal as a show of good faith. I don't think that is going to resolve this issue, but I appreciate the gesture.

I called Honda Automotive corporate today and received a case number for the tailgate filling up with water on our 2016 Pilot. They told me that they are aware of this issue, but are relying on their dealerships to either resolve or up-channel.

I also called Honda of Seattle (since it rains there a lot), to see if they've been able to resolve this with their customers. I'm waiting to hear back from them.

Here are some links I found to others experiencing the same issue:

We love our Honda Pilot and trust that Honda will resolve this. I'll report back anything I find.

Has anyone out there actually received a definitive resolution to their issue?

Mine was resolved 100% back in 2016, basically on mine which might be the same issues as others, according to the stealership, the drain holes in the trunk area was clogged.so.. they replaced the drain holes and carpeting in the trunk.

Can you show a picture of the drain holes? I don't recall seeing one but am worried because lots of water pour out when I lift the tailgate after a carwash or after it's been in the rain.

Hi, all.

After a little research I found a really good, family-owned Honda dealership in our area. Our 2016 Pilot is currently in the shop being worked on. I'll report back what they found (and hopefully fixed) once I get the Pilot back.

Stay tuned...

Hi, again.

I am happy to report that the leak seems to be fixed. The family-owned dealership that did the diagnostic and repairs was awesome.

They ran the car through their rain tower and found water leaking into the trim at the back of the tailgate. They then removed the trim and ran it through again to see if they could pinpoint where the leak was. They found a small section of the body that was malformed and not sealed. A regional Honda manager visited the dealership to confirm the defect and authorize the repair at no charge. The car has been driven in the rain several times after the repair and it doesn't seem to be leaking anymore.

I would encourage anyone with this issue to:

1. Contact Honda of America, speak to a customer service representative, and get a case number.
2. Visit a reputable and reliable dealership to diagnose and repair under that case number.

I hope this helps.

Hi, did you take a picture of the area where the deform was located before they fixed it? If not, would you still take a picture of the area and share it with us?

Thanks

In May 2017 was the first time I had issues with my tail gate leaking into my car. I could hear water sloshing around. I took it to the dealer & they did not want to cover it. We had to get Honda America involved & they finally covered the cost after them seeing all these 2016 pilots with this issue.
Now it’s February 2019 & it just started leaking again! I can hear the water sloshing around again. I just took it to the Dealer and waiting to see what what they say.
It’s very frustrating when you buy a nice new car and it has a factory defect! I don’t understand why there has not been a recall on this issue!

It's been a year now and I finally got this fixed! The key was to reproduce the issue at the dealer. To reproduce this issue, simply place a running hose on the roof directed towards the tailgate hinge area with the tailgate closed for 5-10 minutes. Remove the hose, dry excess water and open the tailgate. The water that leaked into the tailgate runs through the tailgate to the black rubber wire covers into the headliner. The problem turns out to be an "unsealed" seam in the tailgate metal above the hinges. A fairly small section of the assembled sheet metal was not completely sealed allowing the water into the tailgate above both hinges. Thanks to the relentless efforts of Larry, Scott, and the service team at Landmark Honda for working through this to a solution! See attached image for the approximate location of the "unsealed" area:
Trunk Automotive exterior Vehicle Bumper Auto part

Note: Make sure the 4 plastic stoppers at the bottom of the tailgate are present. If they have been removed, cover the holes with electrical tape prior to the water test.

Additionally, they removed and resealed the tail light lenses in the tailgate as part of the initial troubleshooting.

Hi, thank you for your post. I would like to bring this to the attention of my dealership, so I am wondering if you have had anymore leak issue's with your Pilot?
