Suspension noise?

I have 7900 K on and I still have this problem. When I have two people in the car, every-time I go over a speed bump, my rear suspension makes a bad noise. It sounds like bushing lacking lubrication. Anyone else has this problem?

I've got a rattle in the right rear suspension when going over bumps. There was a thread on this some time ago. I'm going to have the dealer look at it when I take my Pilot in for its first service.

I had a similar issue. It was a squeaking type of noise from the right rear. The dealer replaced the strut and it has not come back. They were able to duplicate it by pushing down on the corner of the bumper pretty hard.

suspension noise / rattle

I have this problem as well. Occurs when driving at speeds less than 30 mph on roads with "washboard" bumps as well as going over "cats-eyes" or even with roads that have been repaired over and sealed at the seams with asphalt. Drive with the windows up and turn radio off and keep AC on real low, so you dont get bothered byother noises. Tune your ears for sounds coming from over your right shoulder when you drive over the bumpy surface at speeds less than 30 mph. Sounds coming from the rear, over the wheel areas.
Taken to dealer 3 times to fix. They put "chasis ears" to confirm that the noise was coming from struts. Replaced struts but problem stayed. Called HONDA TECH SUPPORT to ask for help. They told the dealer that there is a "problem" with the valves in the shock absorbers of the struts that make these noises. They cannot do anything about it.
Drove another Honda PILOT at the dealer lot, and indeed it too had the same noise, when driven over the bumpy surface . So basically all Honda Pilots can have this problem! Now doesnt that make you feel good. Try it and see if you also hear this noise.

No satisfied

I have been driving with this problem since last year. I am used to it. Took it to the dealer many times (almost 9 times) and driven at the dealer almost 500 miles for test drive (33 gallons of gas). I feel bad because all the dealers have fixed these problems either at the 2nd or 3rd trip. I think either tech's don't know what they are supposed to do or they are not trained or...

I have this problem as well......it started a couple of weeks ago at about 5,500 miles......the best way I can describe it is like this:

A 'soft' crunch that soulds like rubber on on metal. It's at the right rear of the car and I can duplicate it by standing on the bumber pad and bouncing the car up and down. Agree with the the-engineer's assessment - it appears to happen most at low speeds and / or where there is long-slow travel of the suspension.

It it not a true "crunch", nor is it metal on metal.....sounds like a bushing of some kind. I will try Inspireme77's fix before bringing it to the dealer.

Inspireme77: Any way you could post pics of exactly where you applied grease? Thanks.....

I have the right rear rattle since i got the car in May. Is there anybody out there that have had this problem solve by the dealer? ..what was the solution? I took my car to the dealer and they just retorque the rear suspension but rattle still there..please let's stick together with this problem until we find a real solution

My rattle seems to be getting worse. It seems like a design flaw in the vehicle. We probably should start lodging complaints with Honda Customer Service since the dealers don't seem to be able to fix it.

PROBLEMS

RECENTLY 4/28/04 TOOK DELIVERY OF NEW 2004 HONDA PILOT AND THERE ARE A FEW BUGS! THE PILOT HAS THE FOLLOWING ISSUES:
1. TROUBLE STARTING, USUALLY AFTER VEHICLE SITS OVERNIGHT BUT HAS HAPPENED AT OTHER TIMES AS WELL.
2. VIBRATION AT SPEEDS 70MPH AND ABOVE
3. LOUD KNOCK SEEMS TO BECOMING FROM RIGHT SIDE FRONT AND CAN BE HEARD ONLY OVER BUMPY DIRT ROAD AT VERY LOW SPEED, LESS THAN 15MPH.

SINCE I ONLY HAVE 500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE I AM A BIT SURPRISED TO HAVE PROBLEMS ON A NEW HONDA VEHICLE. THE 2004 SHOULD HAVE THESE PROBLEMS RESOLVED BY NOW.

I have had mine in the shop now twice for the same "scrunching noise", only mine is coming from the driver side rear. They replaced the shock, but that was not it. They have it now, and I was able to replicate the sound for the shop manager and lead tech. I will post what they did, and if it is fixed, hopefully today sometime.

Jmartinage: First of all, welcome to the board, and congratulations on choosing the best SUV for the money!

As far as your problems, start by doing searches all over this board to educate yourself.

1. TROUBLE STARTING, USUALLY AFTER VEHICLE SITS OVERNIGHT BUT HAS HAPPENED AT OTHER TIMES AS WELL.
This will probably be solved by waiting 2 -3 seconds before starting the Pilot - that's all you need to do - it allows the vehicle to recognize the computer chip in the key - part of the security system. Search: "Starting Problems Revisited" thread

2. VIBRATION AT SPEEDS 70MPH AND ABOVE
This could be a tough one - search "70mph vibration" and "egr valve" for some info. Hopefully yours is a simple tire/wheel balancing issue, and not one of the more serious problems encountered here.

3. LOUD KNOCK SEEMS TO BECOMING FROM RIGHT SIDE FRONT AND CAN BE HEARD ONLY OVER BUMPY DIRT ROAD AT VERY LOW SPEED, LESS THAN 15MPH.
Search "right front", "clunk" or other similar noise sounds. A few members have had problems with broken strut mounts, or even broken struts or shocks. This should be easily found and fixed.

VERY IMPORTANT - Let your dealer know how unbelievably disappointed you are that 1) these problems exist; and 2) they didn't detect and solve them in their pre-delivery inspection and preparation. Then demand some compensation in the form of a cash rebate. After he poilitely rejects that request, suggest one or more of the following:

1. Extended warranty incentives
2. Side steps/running boards
3. Fog lights
4. Free maintenance coupons
5. All-season floor mats
6. Rear splash guards
7. Cargo tray
8. Roof rack crossbars

You get the idea...

Let us know how it turns out...

What info on the bulletin do you have, links, etc?
I would like to present this to the shop while they have it.

right rear strut

Brought my 2004 Pilot with 7000 miles in to dealer this morning for oil change and tire rotation. I also asked to check into the "rattle from right rear." The rattle started about a month ago but has been getting worse. Anyway they just called and told me the right rear strut needs to be replaced and of course it is not in stock and has to be ordered.

Mine is getting fixed next week for the same problem. They are replacing the shocks along with Brake shim addition. I have problem with my passenger side window which rattles when it is half way down. The Lead tech agreed to change the controller.

Alrighty then!
Here is what was told to me, and I inpected the fix for the rubbing/scrunching noise in the rear when the Pilot suspension travels upward.

They replaced the driver rear shock, but that was not it. The discovery, by use of chassis ears, was the rubber boot, that sits on the end of a stationary shaft housed inside the coil spring. This shaft is not a strut, nor does it travel at all. It is hard mounted to the body/frame, and it is designed to allow the rubber boot at the botton to insert into the swingarm cup below, which is to keep the shock and suspension from bottoming out. This Rubber boot is about 4 inches in length and hollow inside to allow it to flatten out a bit under load. This is what is causing the sound as it rubs against and inside the metal cup. They applied Dow-Corning silicone treatment to it, due to it being dried out, and they suspect that it was not treated properly at the factory. I imagine you could even fix this issue by applying some grease to it where it hits the inside of the cup in the swingarm, although I would go with the silicone first. The sound is completely gone, and they could not find any other component that was making a noise.

Hope this helps you guys out.

I get this left rear when going over the speed bumps slowly. Going to have the dealer check it out when I go in for first service. Annoying to say the least, but can deal with it for now. Appreciate the info!

Ahhnuld, thanks for posting! I just got my Pilot back after they replaced the dampener (or is it damper?) and my squeak/creak from the rear when I go over bumps is still there. Even after test driving with the tech, he said some noises were "normal" and that they would need to hook me up to the "chassis ears" to see what they could find - otherwise I am SOL. They also asked that I load the Pilot up with as much weight as possible to see if the noise became louder. I know this scrunching noise is not normal, nor was it there when I drove the Pilot home. I drove a new Pilot on the lot today, and it did not make this sound. About the silicone they used for you -- the tech told me that they won't lubricate anything because "it would be a temporary fix for something possibly more serious." He wouldn't expand, but I'm wondering what thoughts you or anyone else may have on this. I just want the squeak gone! Thanks!

Hey Kimbo,
I got up under the vehicle with the advisor when he showed me what was causing the noise, which sounds exactly like rubber rubbing against metal.
If you want to try this yourself, I would suggest going to any Honda motorcycle dealer, or even the car dealer may have this. Buy a can of Honda brand silicon lubricant, it comes in a green and black can. Get up under your Pilot, and coat the rubber bumpers that sit at the bottom on the inside of the coil springs. I will bet your sound goes away.
At any rate, I would not be too concerned about "something serious" being wrong. I am confident we found the cause, and it is due to nothing more than dry rubber rubbing the inside of the cup that is part of the lower suspension arm attached to the axle.
