I am eagerly waiting for my Pilot to arrive...hopefully next week....i asked the dealer about getting a sunroof....he quoted me around 1500 and showed me one they installed in their model....i was snooping around at another dealer and they told me they would not put a sunroof in...that Honda said that it compromises the saftey of the vehicle....hmmm...anyone have any info on this???

FWIW, my salesman said the same thing (unsolicited, I'd don't have an interest in a sun roof, personally). Something about how they won't cut the continuous steel bands that that give the roof the high-level of safety that it is engineered with.......

I call "BS"

No car company is going to recommend an aftermarket sunroof, (if for liability reasons alone).
No car dealer is going to know the real reason for not putting a sunroof in.
The MDX has one. My guess is that it would put the Pilot outside its target market price point.
I also guess that Honda has done a bit of market research to determine the value to the target consumer for many options.
Remember, factory options also add complexity to the build mix, and carry costs beyond parts and labor.
Odyssey does not have Sunroof either, CR-V and MDX do have.

Did anyone compare the roll cage on the Pilot vs the roll cage on the MDX? I'll bet they are pretty darn close and if one can have a sunroof so should the other.

My only question would be how it affects your DVD system. I'm sure that would be an issue. A standard LX, EX, and Navi should be fine.

Re: I call "BS"

Sorry, N_Jay, I gotta disagree with you - I don't think that Honda dealers are going to recommend *against* putting in an aftermarket sunroof, unless there is a design reason for it. Why risk driving away prospective Pilot buyers by telling them they shouldn't if in fact they can? For some, it might be the deal breaker to send them to Toyota, Jeep, etc.

And, similarly, why is it inconceivable to think that a Honda dealer would know why Honda would chose to not include an option?

We agree to disagree

Having worked in sales I still call BS.
But you are free to disagree.
Lets wait a year and see what the aftermarket sunroof companies have to say about it.
There is also an online Hondfa dealer showing a sunroof aftermarket option.

Was wanting a sunroof on mine also, but the dealer stated that Honda was going for a top saftey rating on the Pilot for SUV's, thus no sunroof.
I'm afraid that is just salesperson BS. The only items that are rated for safety by recognized agencies are front and side impact, along with a static calculation of rollover resistance. None of those are affected by the presence or lack of a sunroof.

The MDX has a moonroof, and it has top scores in the IIHS offset frontal crash test, NHTSA side-impact test, and the NHTSA rollover resistance rating (for an SUV). NHTSA hasn't given it the full-frontal crash test yet but supposedly it'll get top scores there too (according to Honda).

Unfortunately, I think the real reasons the Pilot doesn't have a moonroof are 1) to help the DVD option fit; 2) reduce the cost of the Pilot; and 3) to provide for more differentiation between the MDX and the Pilot.

I'll bet that once Acura upgrades the MDX, they'll release a Pilot with a moonroof.

I believe it's HONDA published BS ....

that it has trained its salespeople in order to sell the PILOT. Honda hasn't designed a sunroof for the PILOT yet ... is all they had to say ... but no ... with salespeople every negative has to have 100 positives ... The ACURA MDX has a sunroof there isn't a reason the PILOT should not ...

Our dealer had a moon roof installed on an EX without DVD. Said it fit right in without having to modify the cross bars in any fashion. Suspect many of you are right in that Honda will probably offer one as soon as the MDX gets the upgrade. It won't work with the RES/DVD as the shade would hit the unit when opening. I am getting the RES/DVD as I think we will get much more use out of that than we would the moon roof. P.S. It added $1295, to the cost.

Power Moonroof w/ RES (DVD)?

Is anyone certain if a moonroof w/ shade cannot be installed with the RES model? I know common sense would dictate that its not likely, but I wasn't sure what parts of the RES were actually inside the headliner, and if any of them could be moved or re-routed to accomodate a moonroof (ie. cables, etc.)? I wasn't sure if the RES was actually mounted to the headliner or the roof? For instance, my Accord has a dome light in the middle of the headliner, but it still can accomodate a moonroof (I realize its a lot smaller than the DVD).

Does anyone have a moonroof installed in their Pilot and can they share some pictures with us?

sun/moon roof with RES

Here is a story with an interesting twist. When we decided to get a Pilot, the one sure thing was, I was going to get the factory installed RES. We put a deposit down on a Taffetta White. When it came in, my wife decided she likes Havasu Blue better, so we declined the white. When we drove by the lot today to ask about a moonroof installed on a black pilot, we discovered that since we turned down the White with RES, they decided to add a sunroof to it. So, yes, a sunroof will work in a Pilot with the factory RES. We saw, we operated it, and pictures to follow immediately. The salesman said the unit was a Webasto. www.webasto.com
Not much info on their site, but you can find local dealers. Enjoy the pictures posted by Havasu. BTW, this is the exact same Taffetta White Pilot, that Havasu pictured in the gallery. (before they added the moon roof)

Moon Roof in Pilot with RES

Here is a picture of the moonroof closed, with RES clearly behind it (screen closed), taken from the back right seat area.
See previous post by tibbitts for the story behind this.
See the thread in Gallery (http://www.honda-pilot.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=363) for pics of this Pilot before the sunroof.

Nice pics Havasu!

That looks like a nice wide sunroof. Do you know what kind it is? If not, how about the name/# of the shop/dealer that did it?

Thanks
