Acura / PILOT Cousins

With the MDX on the list of the most reliable - you can feel reasonably assured that the PILOT is there as well.

After all, a HUGE percentage of the MDX platform is what makes up the PILOT.

So, if the MDX scores high on the list - I think us fellow PILOT owners can take that as our PILOT ranking high as well.

That's the way I interpreted it as well. From a relability stand-point, how different could they really be. That and the review of the Pilot on Consumer Report's Web Site is impressive. (Especially since they say that their only qualm is road noise).

3 Honda/Acura SUVs in the list of most reliable SUVs:
Acura MDX
Honda CR-V
Honda Element

Honda/Acura also makes the list of most reliable:
Small cars
Midsize cars
Sporty cars

The only lists they didn't make were minivans and trucs and Honda doesn't have a truck yet. All in all, I'd say that's a pretty decent showing.

Quote From Consumer Reports:

The Pilot manages to combine the best of a wagon, SUV, and minivan at an affordable price. It's a car-based SUV like the upscale Acura MDX. The Pilot's a bit roomier, though, and less costly. It's currently our top-pick SUV for this price bracket. It has a less powerful version of the MDX's smooth V6, and shares its five-speed automatic and full-time AWD system. . The Pilot delivers spirited performance yet respectable fuel economy; a comfortable ride; and secure, responsive handling. Pronounced road noise was our only qualm. The standard 60/40 split third-row seat folds neatly into the floor, creating ample cargo space. Access is easy, and fit and finish are impeccable. Crash-test results are impressive.

Thanks Kemo, for risking copyright infringement for the benefit of us all. :22:

Consumer Reports does not publish findings unless the quantity of data is sufficient. I don't have the April 2003 issue (April is their annual car buyer's guide), but I'd bet they didn't publish any reliability data for the Pilot because it's a first year vehicle. Their data is based on their annual survey sent to subscribers.

I wouldn't presume reliability to necessarily be comparable to the MDX, but more like the Odyssey, since they're made at the same plants. Still should be good.

Nah, I don't look at it that way. The majority of the so called imports are manufactured in North America anyway to make any discerning distinction like that.

I was surprised not to find any Korean imports on the Most Unreliable list though. I thought for sure you'd see one of the three in there.

But I find the most surprising entries are those expensive European luxury vehicles in the Most Unreliable list. Can you imagine having paid that much money for one of those puppies and have so much go wrong? I'm sure not every one of those car owners experienced quality problems, but must've been a relatively substantial number to have made such a dubious list.

Here's an excerpt posted by wmquan over at acuramdx.org:
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14460

Mid-sized and large SUV's:

"Much higher than average" (the full red dot)
Toyota Land Cruiser (almost 80% better than average)
Toyota Highlander (about 70% better than average)
Infiniti FX (about 65% better than average, based on just one model year)
Lexus RX330 (about 64% better than average)
Acura MDX (about 51% better than average)
Toyota 4Runner V8 (about 50% better than average)
Nissan Pathfinder (about 49% better than average)
Mitsubishi Montero (about 45% better than average)
Mitsubishi Montero Sport (about 44% better than average)

Better than average (the half-red dot)
Honda Pilot (about 39% better than average)
Nissan Murano (about 34% better than average)
Toyota Sequoia (about 30% better than average)

Average (white dot)
Buick Rendezvous (about 1% better than average)
Chevrolet Tahoe (5% worse than average)
GMC Yukon (6% worse than average)
Ford Explorer 2WD (13% worse than average)
Mercury Mountaineer 2WD (13% worse than average)
Lexus GX470 (14% worse than average)
Chevrolet Suburban (16% worse than average)
GMC Yukon XL (17% worse than average)

Below average:
Ford Explorer 4WD
Mercury Mountaineer 4WD
BMW X5
Ford Excursion

Much worse than average include:
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Toyota 4Runner V6
Cadillac Escalade
Hummer H2
Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT
GMC Envoy XL
Mercedes-Benz M-Class (about 69% worse)
Chevrolet Trailblazer
GMC Envoy
Chevrolet Blazer
Volvo XC90 (83% worse than average)
Ford Expedition
Land Rover Discovery
Lincoln Navigator

I think the Pilot did very well for a first model year car. Maybe reliability will be even better in the next couple of years?

I think they meant that it's not truck-based. It's based on the Odyssey which isn't technically a car, but is more car-like than a truck.

It's really based on the MDX, which was based on the Odyssey. Now I have heard it said that the Odyssey was based on the Accord but I think we're starting to stretch the transitive property of car design a little bit here.

I think of the Highlander as based on the Camry more than I think of the Pilot as based on the Accord.

Truck based SUVs with high ground clearance are generally not as safe on the road from the point of view of roll-over and emergency manuvering. On the other hand, when a car based SUV tries to get too big for its britches (like the Highlander?), I wonder if safety also starts to suffer? Note that the Highlander has a 3-star rollover rating.

The idea of a light duty off road SUV being based on a minivan seems like a brilliant compromise of car-like ride and safety, larger passenger and cargo space, and AWD safety in snow and rain. If all these musings are true, then the MDX was a stroke of genius.

But maybe all minivans are really just car based smaller vans and I got off to a false start early on in these musings??? Can anyone educate me here?
