When using the rear washer, I have noticed that it does not have a wide spray pattern like the front washers, and instead is a single stream, like a squirt gun. Sure doesn't do a good job wetting the window. Is this the design, or do I have a defective nozzle?

This is the design. You use the stream in conjunction with the wipers to clean the windshield. Works for me.

spray ... just a single stream straight down ... seems to work fine ... I just get the direction of the knob turn mixed up ...

The last 3 vehicles I've had, the rear washer was a single stream. But I bet if you use it while driving 70 mph that stream turns into a spray. At least that's been my experience.
