I just made a most pleasant discovery, and I think a few of you
out there may be interested.

There's a FREE light available for NOT AN ASHTRAY! It's already
installed. It just needs a bit of work....

Most Piloteers know that there is a small light in the cubbyhole
forward of the sliding console door. It's in the 'ceiling' of the
cubbyhole. It is a small bulb mounted in a round plug facing
down. The problem is, the lense Honda put in the plug makes
the light so dark it's akin to worthless. I have a tissue box in
there that makes it completely worthless. I happened to remove
NOT AN ASHTRAY, along with it's frame and what should I find in
the top of the frame? I lightbulb mount! Hmmm. It looks exactly
like the fitting in the plug for the cubbyhole light. It fits perfectly!
Here's the directions if you want to do this mod as I did.

1. Slide NOT AN ASHTRAY out of its frame, and set it aside.

2. Remove the three screws that hold NOT AN ASHTRAY's frame to
the dash. One pointing straight forward in the middle of the back
of the frame, and two pointing up in the top of the frame.

3. Using two fingernails, or a thin screwdriver, pry the plug with
the cubbyhole light in it downwards to remove it. It slides in with
a side-pressure spring to retain it, so it will just slide out/in.

4. Turn the light bulb fitting 90 degrees CCW to remove it from
the plug with the lense in it. Pass the lighbulb fitting up through
the hole and down through the opening that the frame recently
occupied.

5. The wire on the plug is too short to reach NOT AN ASHTRAY, so
you must lengthen it. With the lights off, of course, clip the wires
going to the light about 3/4" away from the lightbulb fitting.
Now, carry the lightbulb to the bench and carefully strip the wires
about 1/4". Solder on a 7" piece of light gauge zip cord. (You
need to make the wire longer than you think because the frame
for NOT AN ASHTRAY slides in from the front, and you have to
mount the bulb with the frame pulled out.) Stranded speaker
wire would be good. I used part of a cord from a lighter plug
adapter I gutted for something else. I put heatshrink tubing on
the joints, but electrical tape is fine, It's dry in there and doesn't
move... Strip the other end of the wire 1/4" and tin it.

6. Back in the cubbyhole, strip the wires that go to the lightbulb
and tin them. You will have to remove some of the foam that is
on the wiiire. Now, solder the wire ends to the new wire you
added to the lightbulb fitting. Tape or heatshrink the joint. I
used tape here because it's so tight in there...

7. Pass the bulb fitting up into the frame hole and down through
the rectangular opening that in the middle of the space where
the frame will go. Install the lightbulb into the top of the NOT AN
ASHTRAY frame. I had to use a long-nose pliers to turn the bulb
fitting 90 degrees CW, because I couldn't get a good grip without
it. You should have enough slack to do this without having the
frame in the dash, making it a bit easier. Tuck our new wire up
into the rectangular hole and slide the frame for NOT AN ASHTRAY
into it's place. The wire should back up into a space above the
frame, allowing the frame to seat properly. If the frame does not
seat properly, check for wire being in the way.

8. Reinstall the screws for the frame.

9. Reinstall the lense plug in the cubbyhole.

10. Slide NOT AN ASHTRAY back into it's frame.

Turn on the dash lights and open NOT AN ASHTRAY to find it nicely
lit!!!

If you wanted, it would be a simple matter to put the light back
into the cubbyhole plug to back out this mod. Or, if you are really
ambitious, get another lightbulb fitting like the one in the plug
and splice it into the wire and run 'em both.

But, you can't beat the price of this one!!!

Be nice to NOT AN ASHTRAY. It's hard going through life with such
a negative name. Show NO TEA to NOT AN ASHTRAY! :D

Always a light there? Hmmmm. Not surprising, given that there was already a mount there for the bulb fitting. Res-Pilot, when was your Pilot made? Maybe I have one hiding in the dash....

I just pulled out the not-an-ashtray and took a look. No bulb, but I saw the hole for mounting a bulb holder.

I'm sure kemosabe meant nothing personal with his comment. I think he was trying to point out that it's hard to tell what that is a picture of. I know all I see is a black square with something faintly green in the middle.

Furthermore, I think that Rseery is talking about a different light in nearly the same place. At least I hope he is because like you I have a faint green light that lights up the forward most part of my center console.

Yes, smurray, I am talking about a light that shines into NOT AN ASHTRAY, not the dim one that shines into the cubbyhole... Perhaps my original post was too wordy to be clear enough..... :(

Thanks for clearing that up, Rseery, that was what I thought.
I don't think I have the cajones to start digging around in the dash cutting wires and such but a good idea none the less.

I am missing out :)

Hi, I don't have "not an ashtray" in my pilot. It is 2004 EX-L with Navigation system. Was it there in 2003 models with nav? I feel like I am missing out on all the discussion on "not an ashtray :)

Anyway, I am getting XM radio in that slot and would have to get it out if I had one. I will pick up m pilot today from dealer after installing XM radio, RES system, environment protection pakage and window tinting. Yes, I did it all with the dealer as I am not hand. Hope it looks and works well. Will post some pictures soon.

FYI: Our 2004 Pilot EX-L w/NAV no-longer has the "infamous Not An Ashtray slide out tray/container", ... that location now houses the Driver (L) & Passenger (R) Front Seat Heating Control Switches.

p_iturra: Thanks for the FYI -- much appreciated!!! :29:

My attempt in the previous post was to show muktibodh where the "Not An Ashtray" was located in the 2003 model... It was in response to his/her question, "Was it there in 2003 models with nav?" :p

Thanks kemosabe!!!

Well then, ... we've got both years (2003/2004) covered for those 2004 owner's browsing this thread!

NOTE: Based on Honda's 2004 Pilot Brochure, ALL EX-L models will have the "Driver (L) & Passenger (R) Front Seat Heating Control Switches."

I'm guessing that the EX and LX models might have the "infamous Not An Ashtray slide out tray/container". Maybe, some 2004 EX or LX owner can confirm that.

Now, if they do have the "infamous Not An Ashtray slide out tray/container", they can, … if they are adventurous enough, … perform the "Put a light in NOT AN ASHTRAY" procedure outlined in the beginning of this thread.

By the way kemosabe, love all your posts and I must admit, if it wasn't for this great forum & all your INFORMATIVE POSTS, my Pilot research and shopping would of been a study of 'what not to do when buying a new Honda Pilot!!!"
