What has been your experience with getting/adding the Pilot to your insurance? My agent (St. Farm) will "get back to me" regarding increased premiums because the Pilot hasn't been "rated" yet.

Your experience???

pjl:

My insurane 'Liberty Mutual' added another $895/ to my exisiting car. So with the second vehicle discount it came out to $895. I wanted to shop around a bit but then I just wanted to get all this sorted out soon. Maybe I will do it once I get my plates etc.

I plan on calling AAA. Apparently they have pretty competetive insurance rates.

gupt - appreciate the info but would need to know your levels of coverage (Liability, Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Medical, other) and deductibles (Comprehensive, Collision) to be of use (and if you're willing to share).

Thanks. Somehow I don't think my St. Farm quote is going to come in that low :(. (It's "family" though, so I'll be staying with them.) FWIW, I concur on your Collision level but I like to go with $0 on my Comp since claims under that category don't adversely affect premium levels (unlike Collision).

Overall premiums (including comprehensive/theft coverage) vary widely by geography - even different zip codes in the same town can have significant price differences due to local experiences. State regulation of insurance companies and rates vary as well.

Having said that, I, too, found my State Farm agent more than happy to write the policy and price it based on MSRP because there was nothing on their system. It could stay that way awhile until the industry gathers some statistics on accident rates, repair costs, etc. for this still very, very new vehicle.

Erie used the MDX as a base then subtracted for it not being Acura and being leather with all the extra stuff. I forget the exact letters but a new MDX was somewhere in the N letter range so the Pilot was put at L. They also used the Odessy as a bench mark to be sure they didn't go below it. I think their pricing seems fair and they were right on the button when I asked about an MDX when it first came out.

Their rating system starts at numbers then rolls into letters. (I think it is single digits 1-9 then A-Z) Either way we had a 96 Tacoma which came off and the insurance only went up $120 / year. The Tacoma was kind of high for insurance.

Paying about $9/month more than my 2002 CR-V (which I traded in for the Pilot)
