Paint Question - Please read

This is primarily meant for Starlight Silver owners but all input is helpful.

I was looking at my door jams today and noticed they are much lighter, almost primer like, compared to the paint on the outside of the vehicle. Does anyone else have this two-tone effect? It worries me now because as I look across my hood I don't see a clean even spray. It almost appears blotchy and hazed. I thought it was just dirty so I gave it another good bath and check it in the light today. It still appears the same.

I am going back to the dealer tomorrow and would appreciate it if someone else could check. I need to know if I should complain about this.

Thank you.

I have the Havasu Blue and noticed similar.
The door jambs and inside the fuel filler door don't have the clearcoat metallic coating.
They look very bland.

I have an SS like you, and immediately noticed this issue. The door jambs are gray, and there is no consistency in the clearcoat spray, you're right.

You can ck with the dealer to see what they say...I'm curious.

To be frank, all the little issues I have had with this car, could have been avoided with a little more quality control at the factory. I would not go as far as to say that I am sorry that I bought the car, only time will tell, but it does make me second guess the quality of Honda.

I have an SS. Will check today when I get home. Doesn't sound good though. Let us know what the dealer has to say on this.

Update step 1

Just to follow all the right rules.

I called Honda and expressed my concern. They feel the haze and blotchiness may be resolved by a good wax and buff from the dealer. It may have been some of the shipping 'stuff' still on the vehicle.

The door jams are still a question. I will let you know what the dealer claims tomorrow. (Any bets on, oh it is supposed to be like that?)

If anyone has a vehicle which the colors are the same inside and out please let us know as well. A little fire power always helps.

RE: Painted Jams...

I have a similar non-painted door jams in my SS also. It almost appears as if, at the factory, they just clearcoated the primer, or 'skimmped' out on extra SS paint layers. It would be interesting to see what Honda would say!

banningjr:

Can you clarify what you mean by "inside and out" ? is this paint problem on the outside on both doors (drivers and passengers) ?? or is this specific to a particular door ?

When the doors are closed you see your normal silver color on the vehicle. When you open the door and look at the door jambs you should see the same color as what is on the rest of the vehicle. What I have found, and others as well, is that this area looks like it is just a cheap primer like job and maybe a few layers of paint have been missed. It is extremely evident when you look at the rear passenger doors because there is a plastic body colored piece between these doors and the rear cargo area window. I will have to get a picture up here to show you.

The blotchiness on the hood is being worked on at the dealership right now. I hand waxed an area on the front of the hood and the blotchiness went away so that was apparently poor preparation by the dealer. As long as they make it right I am a happy camper.

I have looked over my SS EX carefully tonight. All my door jams and panels inside the vehicle look lighter but when you put your eyeball very close to the panel the paint has the same metallic as the outside (at least on mine). My wife had Zaino d all the painted inside surfaces when she did the outside on Friday (bless her) so there is a glare. She did not notice any difference in the outer surfaces vs the inner ones. They are most certainly clear coated.
This silver paint has very little pigment in it compared to my 2001 Forester which it sits next to in my garage. I noticed immediately that my silver Forester now has a brownish hue. The Pilot is absolutely the purist silver (and lightest ) I have ever seen.
An optical illusion?
I will look it over in the sunlight and see if that makes a difference.
My paint on the exterior however is flawless save one piece of dust painted between the metallic and the clearcoat. It is very evenly painted . There is no metallic shading anywhere.

Please let us know what the dealer says.

My kids and I examined our SS EX-L's door jams this afternoon, and can't pick up on what you're saying. Now that I reread your post, maybe we were looking at the wrong area....

We looked at the bottom of the doors (the threshholds as you enter the car, so to speak), and they looked great to us. Looked identical to rest of paint to us, and we looked very hard. There is one small piece in each rear door threshhold that appears to be unpainted metallic trim, tho since the car is silver, it's hard to notice it. In other colors, I'm wondering what that looks like? I'm also wondering what that piece will look like over time?

I looked at front door jams (where the door hinges are located) and they also looked perfectly painted and shiny clear-coated to me. I'm not positive that I looked at the rear door hinge area, however, so I'll check that out tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a pic of the area in question would be helpful...

Oh, btw, I checked the paint job thoroughly before buying the SS, because I had read about problems with that color on MDXes and maybe even on Odysseys. Mine looked and looks flawless to me...a very nice Silver, as djs noted. Hope your hood evens out with the wax...I'm eager to Zaino mine!

DJS -- what Zaino products did your wife use? What are her recommendations for a Zaino newbie?

I checked the paint on the inside on the rear passenger door. The paint looks lighter than the outside Silver but it looks 'even' to my eyes. I will go take a look at it in sunlight and have my wife take a look as well. But in all honesty I would not (and did not) have noticed it, had it not been mentioned here on this forum.

Let us know what other people find out.

I guess my biggest concern here is on every other vehicle I have ever owned the color on say the hood or any other outside surface was ALWAYS the same as what was in the door jambs. This was without question, including both my Accords and my wife's Civic. This is the first time I have seen any vehicle with paint in the door jambs not the same color as the exterior. Maybe a wax will help this as well???

The response from the dealer today, 'Honda made it like this but they can't tell me their reasoning.' If the other posts here ring true it sounds like a flaw to me. Maybe early models were affected? Mine was 317 and I thought most of the Havasa Blues seemed to have low numbers. Does that match on any of these?

Thanks for checking and if anyone else finds or sees anything please keep us informed.

I will go check my black accord, but I am guessing you may be right in that the colors on the outside may be the same as the ones on the door jams.

The Silver outside on the Pilot and the "light silver with a very light green tinge" on the door jams is not all that different though.

Can you post a picture ? We do not have a digital camera (I am very tempted to buy one though, maybe this weekend - 4th July sale) otherwise I would have gone outside and posted a picture here.

I will get a pic tomorrow, A: It will be day light, much better for picture taking and B: It is currently at the dealer getting its fog lights, auto mirror, bug guard, and rear muds to match the cross bars and cargo cover. I'll be taking plenty of pictures!

(Who knows maybe recon worked a miracle and it will all look the same.)

Second FYI : When I spoke to the dealership about it not being waxed for delivery they said, 'We don't wax it, we just wash it because Honda puts on their own wax when they ship it to us. Yeah, I guess that is right under the shipping plastic!

Thanks banningjr.

When I found a "very minor" scratch on my Pilot above the rear wheel, I mentioned to him and he said they will have the car waxed and buffed and it will go away. Of course, it didn't go away and I was getting a little irritated and then they gave a bottle of silver touch-up paint (which I haven't used yet !).

This is the interior door jamb as advertised on the Honda Digital Newsroom site. Note the Silver is bright and matches what you would find on the exterior of the vehicle. This is NOT what my door jamb looks like.

We're picking up our Silver Pilot tomorrow (Wed) and I'll be sure to check out the inside color.

Since we purchased it at a dealer who is an hour and a half away, I won't be very happy if the inside and outside don't match. We bought it on Sat and there was a "cut/test" in the third row seat so we couldn't take it home them. I really don't want to drive it back to Delaware from MD to have them wax it.

Thanks for the heads up.
