New Pilot owners! My daughter's first car!

999 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  summaspilot
So today I picked up an '09 Pilot that a family member generously gave to my daughter, as her first car. It has approx. 190,xxx mi. Said family member was the only owner. Supposedly was regularly maintained, but I think that meant regular oil changes and brake replacement. I do not know if tranny fluid or rear diff fluid was done. I plan on doing those myself.

Anyway, I am glad to have found this forum and will probably ask many questions! After using "search" of course lol

Hello, glad you found us.
Yes, it’d be good to know the maintenance history. Hopefully the timing belt was changed at least once. That to me at this moment would be the most important thing to find out. Honda recommends it to be changed at 105k miles or every 7 years, which ever comes first. When this is done, most shops replace the water pump with it. It’s a great time to drain the radiator for a 2 gallon flush of the coolant when this is done.

The first checklist is more complete and was originally created for a 1st generation, but most items also apply to a 2nd gen. The second checklist is specifically for a 2nd gen.

Advice for test driving a used Pilot
Advice for test driving a used Pilot - Honda Pilot Forums
Greetings Pilot owners, My wife and I are going to be picking up at 2014 Pilot LX this Thursday. Although we are excited and thankful that this whole mostly frustrating purchasing new car experience will be over, I'm starting to lose confidence in this investment we are making, based on the number of VCM related issues that other owners on this site have been reporting for some time.

Has the VCM been deactivated? Better late than never...

S-VCM Controller - Disable VCM / deactivate VCM and stop ECO in Honda Acura
Deactivate Honda VCM in 3.5L V6 SOHC engines. The S-VCM Controller is an automobile grade, high precision tool that can reliably disable VCM 100% of the time, and would safely bypass in case the engine overheats. It does not use a fixed resistor or manually adjusted potentiometer, and is a much better solution than VCMuzzler, VCMTuner, MaxiLink, VCM Muzzler, VCM Suppressor.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with above that verifying the timing belt was changed is of highest importance.

Thank you for your feedback... there is a sticker in the engine bay that looks like it says the timing belt was done at around 80K, so I am having it done, along with the water pump, etc. right away.
Unfortunately, the A/C compressor needs to be replaced, so I am having that done as well. Oil change and air filter were already done. I think I will buy the S-VCM and install that. I also have the VTM-4 fluid so I can do that change myself. There are some other minor repairs that I need to do...
