Missing torque converter cover

Good day lads. Got an interesting question to ask. A friend of mine recently bought 2014 Crosstour (with 3.5L and 6spd auto), and we were changing fluids last nights and I observed missing torque converter cover exposing flywheel, which has been found covered in rust. I believe I've located the part itself and he'll likely have it ordered here shortly. My question though, how bad the damage could've been done to the flywheel due to being exposed to mother nature? any tips and tricks on how to get rid of the rust? thanks yall

The opening is probably too small to effectively prep, treat or sand away the rust. Blow out or physically remove any debris buildup and perhaps squirt some WD40 on the surface and close it up.

Just wondering if it be ok to first spray it with fresh water to remove any salt that managed to splash up in there? Then a WD-40 treatment or some other rust protection?

I wonder if there was any exposure to internal transmission components due to this cover missing?

btw, fluid drained looked really dark at 100K on the odometer. I believe it was changed since there were signs that drain bolt has been cracked before. Normal amount ofsludge on the bolt magnet

Nope, nothing internal or that can be damaged was exposed. I would spray it put with air/water, replace the cover and move on.

Sounds like it needs some MaxLife ATF. 😁👍

Indeed kind Sir. 3.5qts of maxlife went in. Next time he swings by my house to get the brake fluid flushed, we’ll get another drain and fill done. Hopefully he’ll get a cover ordered by then. Cheers

I appreciate the feedback Sir. We’ll get the cover ordered an put on. Would this be the right part to get?
