Hi all,

Four year member but don't post too much.

We've notice a loud buzz/humming coming from the under the hood during a cold start. It happens when the Pilot is put in D or R and our foot is on the brake. The strange thing is that when the Pilot assumes normal operating temperature, the noise seems to go away, which makes it hard to duplicate while at the mechanic. Our Pilot has 130,000 miles and and is a 2010. It's had its timing belt, water pump, plugs, valves adjusted, and front suspension replaced this year. We're thinking it's related to the timing belt and read the posts on the tensioner bolt but are not sure...

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Some of the simpler things to eliminate:

Loose exhaust parts; shields, worn pipe flange gaskets...
Busted motor mounts

You can start the vehicle while it is gear?

I believe the noise you are hearing is from the starter. Kinda of a quick whine that goes away after a few seconds? Like this: YouTube

The thought also crossed my mind. Will do some more creeping around this weekend and hopefully will get lucky!

It only lasts for a few minutes while the car is cold. Then it seems to go away (or else we just get used to it).

Do you hear the same sound after a cold start if you:
1) Leave it in park with foot off the brake pedal. Leave emergency brake set just in case.
2) Leave it in park with foot on the brake pedal
3) #2 and rev the engine a bit
Just trying to determine if you can reproduce the sound without putting it in gear.

Have you also stuck your head under the hood while the noise is present to pinpoint which area it’s coming from?
