Kyb new complete struts height difference 2” difference than OEM

I bought struts fromrock a and they are 2” shorter and coil configuration is much tighter than OEM. Where are you buying them from since I can’t find any that are complete assemblies. Searching the web i get teaser adds then confirming the product it shows it does fit. This has been a problem for me for a while. So i jumped in and ordered a pair but they were wrong. Even amazons web site says that don’t fit. So help would be appreciated.

The KYB website lists SR4170 and SR4168 for the 2008 Pilot AWD. IME the KYB springs for the Pilot will have a different configuration from OEM springs. I don't have an explanation why the old struts are longer. Perhaps the wrong ones were used in the past or the struts have failed in an over extended state.

The strut there in the picture is the original one that came with the vehicle. Not chance of it being replaced. Amazon says it the wrong one when i verify it with them. It’s for a Acura mdx not a pilot. I have or duralast brand to see if there the same or not. I can at least return these to the store instead of shipping them back. i see i canbuy all the parts but the coils so i think that is where the problem lies in getting any thing to work exactly like the original ones. But that is what OEM is supposed to be isn’t it ? Thanks foryour input.
As @aggrex mentioned, SR4168 and SR4170 are for AWD Pilot. These will not fit 2WD.

That'll explain your problem, since you indicate you have a 2WD.

Great was wondering why they would send me the wrong ones even though their description at rock a says for this pilot and not distinguishing between 2 or 4 wheel. Thanks

If the error was RA contact them for return authorization but if you inadvertently ordered the AWD version then shipping could be at your expense.

That’s why I’ve ordered from a local place all the mail order so that if it’s the same problem that I have these then I’ll just return it to the store and will have to return it but they’ve given me the OK to send it back and we’re going to Credit make supposedly. There should be a better identification of says no we don’t have that for your vehicle. But instead they try to sell you what you don’t need and hope you won’t return it. i’ve had conversations with a number of persons on Amazon and other places and they confirmed that they would sell less if they didn’t sell you the wrong part so just got to be watchful and use somebody that will do return shipping if it’s not your fault that they sent you the wrong part. Amazon over the past couple years. It’s starting to do that a little better, but they didn’t before and I was always getting the wrong part and sending it back at their expense.

No one loves but then hates RA as much as I do. As I do order from them at least once a month. They have saved me thousands of dollars over the years, but ya, that one time error can make you scream. But in their defense, I don’t believe they were trying to trick you into ordering the wrong part. I personally prefer their website over all others because they don’t overload me with unnecessary graphics or put me in a box by item.
For consumers protection, I recommend verifying and shopping by the OEM part number. In this case with preloaded struts, there is no OEM number. So if you wanted the item.. you would have to trust the description with the potential of a $50 cost to return the items, buy somewhere else with free shipping and returns or buy from your local auto parts stores with a guarantee.

Were the parts you bought "sold and shipped by Amazon", or were they bought from a third party who is using Amazon as their online storefront?
In the past sometimes either. But the struts in the photo were from rock a.
KYB doesn't offer complete assemblies for the 08 FWD pilot - only struts (front left is 339397 and front right is 334364) - looks like RockAuto does offer Monroe and Gabriel full assemblies for the FWD pilot- I'd probably go with the former if I had to pick. RockAuto is great to purchase from, but their customer service isn't so "personal" - you can generally return things, but need to work with them via email for anything out of the ordinary.

Well, except for maybe me. They save me a lot on authentic parts, but beyond that: caveat emptor. And do not order parts too much in advance, because if you surpass their 30-day window for returns, they can be merciless.

Also miffed that their traditional 5% discount codes seem to be drying up.

I’ve been getting working codes here…

Shoutout to @WiiMaster for the tip.

Your original assembly shows rod exposed when fully extended, which perhaps is a sign that something failed internally?
What I meant is that your original failed internally, thus over extended, and nothing wrong with the new.
Interesting observation. Which leads me to wonder exactly what, if any, spec differences there may be between the AWD and the 2WD versions. Worth further investigation, if only for curiosity's sake.
So you’re talking 2 1/2 inches difference. interesting enough I’ve ordered KYV and the other parts and going to use my original spring so I’ll measure the difference and see if there’s any difference and let you know. Thanks for all your input. I really appreciate it very much. Thank you.
There won't be height difference for the fully assembled unit between FWD/AWD (could be a diff for spring or dampen rate, as FWD would be a few hundred pounds lighter).

Nobody in their right mind would design a unit with center boot/bellow not covering the rod when fully extended. It defeats the purpose of having the boot.
