It would be fantastic if a one size fits all option existed that worked in an automobile, the closest thing we are going to get for a LONG time is Apple MagSafe for iPhone users (the magnets align the 2 points perfectly).
Qi2 will be mainstream relatively soon so it won’t be that long but yeah, anyone with a new car currently is out of luck.

It's probably too much to hope for, but maybe Honda will come out with a Qi2 charger in a later MY this generation and we'll be able to buy the part and swap it in.

You’re definitely being optimistic. With how the auto industry is operating currently, I would be impressed to see it ready in time for the mid cycle refresh.

This is hardly a Honda issue as all manufacturers currently have only 1 charging pad in the vehicles but hoping in the near future they will start having two present for the front occupants. My wife and I constantly have to rotate who is using it when we are together.

I have little to no issues with my Samsung S23. Drove 20mins and phone charged from 38% to 50%. I was not using Android Auto though.

iPhone requires precision placement and its design makes it more difficult. I will say this, the ideal placement for wireless charging is basically touching, surface to surface with as little gap as possible.

My iPhone 14+ camera bump introduces a 2.27mm gap, 4.19mm at the top. This IS an issue as coupling is dependent on distance as a factor. The specification has a limitation but the iPhone design eats 67% of that limitation (3.4mm theoretically) without considering the other factors involved for wireless charging. My camera protection pushed the gap to 2.7mm and my phone case brings it to 3.xmm. I don't remember the exact number using my vernier caliper. I'll give you 1 more. If my memory is correct the tolerance for the coils being flat is 1 deg in relation to the surface. I would have to revisit. The iPhone when placed flat is at an angle of 1.5deg. It means that if the charger doesn't compensate for those variables it will be a challenge.

The very design of MagSafe addresses/corrects all of these mechanical challenges and brings some other benefits, which why everyone finds it so great. MagSafe will charge iPhones at 15W, while Qi devices can only do 7.5W (even if it is "MagSafe Compatible"). Is this by accident or design? RQi v1.3 EPP gives 15W, so why has Apple and now Samsung only allow Qi chargers to do 7.5W and 10W respectively? Samsung says you need their wireless charger to get the 15W and for Apple you need Magsafe “to quickly and safely wirelessly charge your iPhone. The system intelligently adapts to conditions to optimize charging your iPhone at up to 15W.”

I will be getting a new case on Wednesday to see if I can improve the experience of my iPhone.

Below is a video that touches on the challenge carmakers are facing.

Apple has released iOS 17.2 RC for iPhone to developers today and is likely to be released to the general public next week. These are the last 2 items on the list of fixes:

  • Qi2 charger support for all iPhone 13 models and iPhone 14 models
  • Fixes an issue that may prevent wireless charging in certain vehicles

here have been multiple complaints from iPhone 15 owners who have had charging issues in their Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick vehicles. In some of these cars, an iPhone placed on the wireless charging pad would either not charge at all or start to charge and then stop.
Most of the complaints were from ‌iPhone 15‌ owners, and came after the iOS 17.1 update. General Motors said in November that it was aware of an issue and investigating the problem.
iOS 17.2 Fixes Bug Preventing Wireless Charging From Working in Some Vehicles.

Looks like it might not fix this issue

I had a similar issue with my iPhone 13 in my 2018 Accord. I found it would make a quiet beep or two when it was trying to “reconnect” to the charger.

I also took my car into service and they said it was the case but I told them it happens without the case on too and they didn’t have an answer for me.

I too played around with the positioning of my phone on the Qi pad and also tried putting it in bottom first and what I found was if I put it on the pad with the top in first and put the phone against that raised plastic on the right side (i.e., right of center) the phone continues to charge with no beeps.

I would give that a try.
Does your phone slide around while you are driving? I loose the charge when I turn the corner, the phone slides off the sweet spot.

17.2 will be released for other iPhones. At a minimum at least all iPhone 13s to current models will support Qi2. Not sure about iPhone 12 though it is MagSafe compatible and I think has the ability to also do Qi2.

For the Qi charges like in the Pilot, the release notes only said it will fix issues that prevent wireless charging in some vehicles so we will just have to wait and see. I hope it will also allow 15W Qu wireless charging instead of the current 7.5W limitation in place by Apple.

For my iPhone 14+, bought a new case to experiment and there is improvement in wireless charging performance even while doing map in CarPlay. (Not saying you should try it or but just sharing). Unlike the old case, I no longer need to remove the case for it to charge on my Lamp (5W Qi wireless charger). In the Pilot I have increased success in charging the phone.

I do ensure the Apple logo is directly above the wireless charging logo on the pad, it will usually switch to Amber. If it flips back to green I gently nudge either up or down to align the coils better and once it goes amber the second time, it rarely has an issue thereafter.

Some actions in the Pilot will make the charge status toggle between amber and green. Actions such engaging the parking brake, opening and closing a door, moving transmission from D to P. Usually it’s for a short time, like 1-2s.

Hi all I have an elite 2023 pilot and I noticed right away the charge pad doesn’t charge properly. Iam using an iPhone 14 pro max I place it on the pad and it will charge for a minute or two and then stop. I took it to service today and they said it could be the case lol which I found funny cause I said I tried it without the case as well. They told me it’s an issue that Honda knows about and is working on which I found is bs. Have you guys had any similar issues with the wireless charging station on your elite models?? Thanks in advance
I understand the frustration .. I have 23 Accord Touring and the charging pad works for maybe a minute on a good day. I took it to Honda and was given the same story. It's a software issue and Honda knows about it. Another issue while I'm venting is the connection from a newish iPhone loses the compatibility every few days. It's a PITA to reset it using both software car & phone to get car play. Let's see what happens and maybe one of the collective will find a fix. Rant off ;)

My wife just said the thing doesn’t work very well. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t. She doesn’t use it that often because her drives are short. Whenever I use it I find myself trying to find that “sweet spot” too. I do notice it gets warm.
There is no sweet spot ... I tried to move around in many positions... I see orange for about an nano second...
Here’s where it gets onto my nerves. If I decide to charge the phone via the wire, the Apple car play may work or may not. I still don’t know how to switch wireless CarPlay to wired. If I hotspot, then bye bye CarPlay
I haven't tried that yet .. I had so many issues with connectivity between the newish iPhone and the car. Was anyone given "free" wireless for three months

iOS 17.2 was released early yesterday morning, try updating to that, see if any of your symptoms improve, especially for iPhone 15 users. The update fixes few issues with wireless charging including support Qi2 standard.

From I have read, something broke in iOS 17.1.1 for some wireless chargers (mostly GM users complained) while Apple tried to address an NFC and Apple Pay issue for BMW users, there is a link above in the thread speaking to that.

As @dj2819 said it may not fix our issue.

I would suggest you do the update, remove the case from the iPhone (if you have one), play around to find the sweet spot. Basically try to align the Apple logo with the charging logo. If it shifts back to green move it a few mm either forward or backward in the space. Between changing my case and doing that, and now updating, I have found my experience is improved for the iPhone 14+ and muscle memory has set in.

We won’t get more than 7.5W of charging using Qi, so if you need fast charging for short trips the wireless wouldn’t make sense due to that limitation unless we get 10W or more, MagSafe or wired charging would be better.

I stopped by local dealer to buy coolant this morning. Talked to a serviceman and he found the right position in the wireless charging pad for my iPhone 13 Pro Max. It had been continuously charging for 15 plus minutes on my way home. What I need to do is to put the phone roughly half-inch outside the edge of the charging pad. Hopefully it can help someone with charging pad issue.

As another data point, I had my iPhone 15 Pro Max on the charging pad on an 8-hour trip and it stayed connected the whole time. I stopped a couple of times to get gas or at a rest stop, but it reconnected and stayed connected every time. I don't know if it's a hardware difference between the 14 Pro Max and the 15 Pro Max or between iOS 16 and 17 (the update happened right around the time that the 15 came out and I didn't use the charging pad in the short time that I had 17 running on the 14).

You mean the side edge or lower edge? Picture of how it works for you ?
