The GM of the local Chevy dealership was a guest at Rotary this week. He told me that the average car owner keeps a vehicle 27 months, and thus is never without a car payment. (Maybe its because he is with General Motors, and that's the vehicles' life spans!)

How often do you get a new car?

What's the longest you've ever held on to an everyday (not a collectable) car?

I've got a 2001 Jeep GC that's a lemon that's I'm about to trade in on a Pilot. I guess it'll be the shortest amount of time I've ever owned a vehicle.

Hi HolsteinKK

I've kept them as short as one year (stupid Chrysler product) to 7 years. Generally, I like to go without car payments for a couple of years in between vehicles if at all possible.

I'm trading a 1989 (yes, eighty-nine) Jeep Cherokee for the Pilot. The other filly in the stable is a nearly new 1994 Acura.

Well, I kept my two Accords 7 and 8 years.
The Taurus and Grand Voyager lasted 5 years.

With these car payments, I'm hoping the Pilot will last a good 8 to 10 years.

Was trading every 2-3 years out of boredom I suspect. Had everything from Toyota's to Jeep wranglers (2 of them).
Then had a Dodge Daytona Turbo for 10 years!
Traded that for '98 Accord which I traded in on Honda's new SUV that was "expected to be announced soon...". That was in 2000 and after 3 years of going to Honda.com looking for the new SUV...finally got my Pilot.
Hope to have it for 10 years...that is unless I get new car fever again and get another Pilot. I gotta stop this!

6 years and out

We have a rule that we keep our cars atleast 6 years which was a compromise between me wanting to keep our cars 10 years (ala Millionaire Next Door) and my wife who want to keep them a much shorter time.:whip:

Holy crap, Tim!

Do you have a dealer's license?

I have owned 13 cars in my 17 years of driving history (in order of purchase):

1978 Cheverolet Impala (high, high miles)
1981 Volkswagon Rabbit (no air, didn't keep long)
1982 Cheverolet Camaro Z-28 w/Cross Fire (boy did that suck)
1981 Mazda RX-7 (wished I hadn't let this one go)
1988 Ford EXP (1st brand new car, the most reliable car I've ever owned)
1988 Pontiac Grand-Am w/Quad 4 engine (what a let down)
1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GX-Turbo (this car was fast)
1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee (2nd brand new car, 1st & only lease)
1983 Datsun 280ZX (gift from my mom, it was in bad shape, I sold it quickly)
1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition (yes, I am a glutton for punushment)
1993 Honda del Sol (totalled)
2001 Oldsmobile Alero (3rd new car)
2003 Hona Pilot (4th new car)

I leased my last four Fords for two years each. Eight years, four trucks. Either I was tired of the truck, or it was tired of running well at the end of the lease. The last couple I intended to keep because I was tired of turning in vehicles so soon. I turned them in anyway after warrenty repairs on things like head gaskets and transmission seals!

I've purchased the Pilot with the intention of keeping it seven or eight years. Maybe more? I love the vehicle, and the local dealer's service dept is great!

We purchased my wife's Audi with the same intention. It's 3.5 years old, and only has 27K miles. It shouldn't be a problem! Same great dealer too!
