Here is the pattern: two hours of freeway driving, then stop and go traffic for 15 minutes. Then, when lightly accelerating the tranny gives a loud and jolting shift between 15MPH and 18MPH. Most recently it also had a jolting shift at 23PMH to 25MPH in addition. Sounds horrible and jolts the vehicle sharply.

Had it in three time Honda dealership. Changed transmission fluid ahead of schedule. No improvement. Service says they cannot do anything without a trouble code showing.

Any thoughts? Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,

Paul

are they giving any explanation on what was wrong with the transmission? what was the mileage on the car? have you had any prior fluid changes done?

Sorry no one responded to your post 20 days ago. Not sure how it was missed.
After a new transmission is installed, I'd put a VCM disabling device on the vehicle. The VCM is known for causing torque converter clutch lock issues. S-VCM is saving my transmission.

Got a resolution. Honda is replacing the transmission. Crazy.
What made them decide to change the transmission? Did it end up throwing a code? How many miles were on the vehicle at the time of replacement? Last question is do you have the 6 speed or 9 speed?

So….
125k on the Pilot. Complete adherence to the maintenance log, done by the dealership. Three months of intermittent hard shifting. 1-2 and sometime 2-3. Jolting. Last week finally threw a code: the dash warning switched between two “Emissions system problem” then “transmission system problem.”

I pulled the code: P0776. “Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance/Stuck Off.”Of course it went away when I got it to the dealership. But the code was still stored in the computer memory.

Senior mechanic said this would not cause hard shifts. He called the Honda tech line. They said the cause was clogged port valves. No way to repair. Thus, replace the transmission!! I checked with an independent transmission specialist. They agreed. The great news is Honda is covering 90% of the tranny and labor.
A good but exhausting solution.

Full Synthetic Valvoline MaxLife ATF has helped these kinds of situations. It does what it says on the back of the bottle.

Nick, thanks so much. Hopefully you saw my detailed response to the other response to my original post.
Question, how does the S-VCM affect the Pilot’s gas mileage?

Some have said 1 mile per gallon. Some say they haven't noticed. For my 2017 Pilot, milage doesn't matter because S-VCM is saving my transmission.
On my Crosstour with 269k miles, it has allowed us to drive another 60k miles, otherwise it would have been parted out by now. I'll take the extra 60k miles + over 1 mpg.
