So I just bought an 04 the heated seats dont work. The switches light up like they are turning on the heaters but no heat. I havent had time to check it out. Is this a common problem?

Yes, this problem gets posted often enough (mainly in the winter). Good thing you discovered it while it’s still blazing hot.?

This is a list of things you should check:
1) Fuses related to the seat heaters.
2) Loose connections at wiring harnesses under the seats.
3) If you know how to use a multimeter measure the resistance across the heater pads. There should be a finite resistance in the low ohm range; very high resistance indicates a break in the heating element.

How important is it? I have heated seats in the minivan and never used them in Canadian winters.

Winters in my area are nowhere as harsh as a Canadian winter and I appreciate the heated seats in my Tacoma. If the seats were cloth I’d probably be able to suck it up.?

Yeah, I always considered heated seats a bourgeois decadence. Until I got leather seats in the EX-L. Sitting on those when the car's been out in -20 all day can really pickle your giblets.
