As the diagram shows, the head-up display projects information onto the windshield. The idea is that the driver does not have to look down at the instrument panel (or even refocus) to read it. This technology is pretty old now, and has made its way from supersonic fighter planes (where the refocus delay cannot be tolerated) to the lowly automobile.
