To make matters worse, the phantom oil pan gasket leak I was going to fix myself but could never confirm myself ended up being a crankshaft front seal leak (I threw a FelPro crank seal kit in with the Aisin water pump/timing belt kit JIC when I dropped off). Per Haynes, this should be very simple since they are already in there.

Mechanic called back to suggest replacing the crankshaft position sensor "while we're in here since it is covered in oil and coolant" - I've confirmed he is charging me what I would pay for the aftermarket part and the OEM is $2x. I have had no issues with the CPS but am leaning heavily toward the replacement given the coolant/oil bath this has taken. Again, per Haynes, they really are already in there especially since we have to do the seal anyway.

Thoughts? At 14.5 years, 138,500 miles, the WP/TB issues I've had, and the desire to keep this 'til it dies, does this replacement make sense or is it one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"?

Half shaft in . . . no problem! Passed state inspections. However, after the coolant flush, that water pump leak (after the 1st replacement lasted only 30k miles) that I had not found time/money to get done worsened considerably (1 quart per day loss). As I said previously, no SMOD; and no combustion gases in coolant; and coolant visibly leaking. So to get to the water pump/timing belt replacement replacement, took it to a new shop this weekend that has very good reviews and will take my parts. Sorry folks, I just couldn't get comfortable messing with the engine like this myself. Water pump issue ended up being the water pump gasket failing - in part because old mechanic didn't just leave the wrong bolt in the side engine mount, but also didn't use Hondabond (or equivalent) on water pump gasket. Still, I'm having them replace the whole kit - pump, TB, tensioners, pulleys, accessory belt rather than just fixing the gasket.

I’ve never used Honda bond or any sealants on the WP gasket. Just made sure the surface is clean and torque bolts properly.

I've seen recommendations both ways - sealant, no sealant. The old kit was the ACDelco TCKWP329 and ACD recommended sealant on the gasket. Guess this means the old mechanic really *%^#ed this up then; maybe they also failed to fully scrape old gasket off and/or failed to properly torque the bolts. And, I can't imagine that that crazy bolt on the side engine mount did any good here.

So, all in all, I'm counting my lucky stars, thank the Lord for this forum, get the seal done and go with the replacement CSP, and then - when everything is buttoned up - take her for a trip to Walmart and then the junkyard (for some @Nail Grease type finds!!).

As for the crank position sensor, if it's been fouled with oil and coolant leaks...

But not all of them have it in stock. If I try to order even just one, the only location within a hundred miles that claims to have it is in Malone, NY. Doable, I've been there before.

But if I try to order two or more to make it worth the trip, then it's out of stock there and within a one hundred-mile radius thereof.

If I try the Ship to Home option, I can apparently get it even if I live in the Northern Mariana Islands (find them on Google Maps ), but not in Montreal, which is less than a hundred miles away.

The above in-stock location search makes me somewhat suspect that the "Advanced" inventory system at the Malone branch is an old-timey whiskered feller using hash marks on the wall behind the hand-cranked cash register, and he's mistaking one of the several cracks in the weathered wall for an in-stock alert.

Have you ever been to Malone, NY? I have, and I believe the infamous escapees from Dannemora Prison circumventing it is its best known claim to fame.

I just ordered 3 for free delivery and will try to hit the one store near me that claims to have just 1 in stock - my dad’s “parts guy” actually works there; so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Got the '07 back. So far, so good - no oil leaks, no coolant leaks. But had to make sure for myself that no coolant made its way into the engine oil; did full Mobile 1 change (High Mileage Full Synthetic, M1 filter); no CMOD; no Tribbles!

Will report back if any more issues but hopefully those Tribbles were just the by-product of some Borg sub-space anomaly and have been vanquished back to the Nekrit Expanse!
