Last weekend I was out of town and filled up when my light came up (~17 gallons). I drove over 100 miles back home and the gas gauge had not moved at all. Luckily I had reset the odometer so I knew about how far I could go before filling up again, but after a while the gauge did start to move. However, when it was nearing empty (based on the mileage) the gauge read 1/2 tank.
I filled up again hoping maybe the problem would magically go away, but the pump shut off at about 10 gallons. It seems like whatever is making the gauge read incorrectly is also making the gas pump shut off prematurely and on a car with bad gas mileage like the Pilot having to fill up every 10 gallons or so is a pain.
I noticed that the metal flap over the tank (that gets pushed up by the nozzle and then springs back into place) was gone. After taking apart the hoses that run to the actual tank there was no flap or any other blockage to be found.
What I'm wondering is what could be causing this problem. I'm hoping there is some kind of sensor that is outside of the tank (or in the piece that appears to screw into the tank) that could be replaced much easier and cheaper than having to drop the whole tank. Anybody else had this problem and know of anything I'm missing? Any help is appreciated!
