I can't see the spot you point to (spring clip) because it is in the support base. This is a current picture and the section you are pointing to in your picture is hidden from view by the support base in my picture. I hope I'm OK to continue banging against the old drive axle at this point (away from transmission) in hopes of separating it at this spot.

Go to the first post on this link in order to download the 2016 service manual if you don't have it already. Then look in the section for removal and replacement and find the driveshaft procedure. Note that some people have had trouble getting the downloads lately.

So it seems that for the 2016 Honda Pilot EX (6-speed) it is all one unit (CV Axle/Intermediate support bearing/Intermediate Axle). I called my local Honda Dealer and that is the only way they sell it for my model (and at $639 CDN). I had ordered just a CV axle from one of my local aftermarket part suppliers (Shurfit). I had to take it all out as one unit from the pilot and when I hold the new CV axle up to what I pulled out, it doesn't look like it would fit even if I was able to separate it. Rockauto lists the CV axle only under the 9-speed model and shows a complete unit (CV Axle/Intermediate support bearing/Intermediate Axle) for the 6-speed model which I just ordered. I can confirm that my pilot (2016-AWD-6-speed) only takes a front right CV Axle with the support bearing and intermediate axle as all-one component. It seems only the 9-speed version can separate the cv axle from the intermediate axle at the support bearing.

Yes, thanks for sharing the experience. Will you be trying the slide hammer chain method?

I tried the slide hammer chain method, but was unable to remove the CV axle from the intermediate axle. But I'm quite sure it isn't made to come apart on my 6-speed model
