My two year old finally took the suspense out of examining the car after every trip to a public lot looking for that first scratch by taking a piece of decorative marble to the Driver's side rear door. Even though he was wacking the car with it (until I got to him), it appears to have only scratched the clearcoat and not gone down to the paint. Is this something that will buff out, or does it have to be treated/touched up? I'm tempted to take it to my local hand wash/detailing shop first. Or should I go right to a paint and body shop?

Caution...

I would approach any detail shop with extreme caution. Far too few are staffed by skilled individuals. Basically the name of the game there is "buff n' go".

Similarly 99% of all body shops concentrate on "collision repairs", they have to in order to make money. The name of the game in those circumstances is "what will insurance allow", and many of the tech would not even think about how to 'disappear' a scratch.

There are shops that do RESTORATIONS where skilled detailers and auto body techs CAN make a good living by concentrating on on the things that most folks don't even know about, but they are few & far between. You probably don't want to pay hundreds of bucks for hours of work that really can't be justified on a 'regualr" vehicle...

I think that if the scratch is so minor that yoiu don't even think it went into the color coat you will have better results by researcing the technigues and DOING IT YOURSELF, if may take a few hours of reading up on the 'net, and maybe and hour or two of work & wait times, but it is probably the BEST way to handle this sort of problem (plus you can teach your two year a skill (in a decade or so) that will provide them with hours of amusement/possible income!!

Wow, sorry to hear about that, Mike.

This reminds me of a simular event years ago in my old Expedition. My daughter drew "pretty pictures" on the inside of the back window....with a ROCK!!! There was no way to buff that out of the glass! Luckily the dealer didn't notice when I turned it in at the end of the lease!!!!!!!

I empathize ... for child to do this it's easy to shrug off and say oh well ... but how about this one ...

My sister rolls up in her brand new ML430 Benz ... of course to show off. Parks hers right next to mine and without any regards to my car throws open her car door and puts a dent in the rear quarter panel of mine 1 week old PILOT. Of course not done intentionally, but why ? I was pissed ... !

This was my first blood story ...

Man... Your first pilot gets jacked at the dealer and now your own family doing damage to the second Pilot... Have you checked the Fung Shui set up in your house? Maybe a disturbance in the flow.:p

Perhaps I need to put the PILOT to sleep every night front facing EAST ... definitely not too much luck this time around buying a new car ... Was thinking of going out tonight buying a bottle of Dom Perignon and smashing it against the wheels or something for luck ...

Anyway, the PILOT went into the body shop today ... hopefully this was just a bump in the road. I guess from this point things can only get much better ... hopefully ...

MY first blood --

My wife parked underground under a cement abuttment. She whipped open the liftgate and smacked the corner of it on the cement overhang. Two deep indents above the PILOT logo!

Also have to look out for friendly dogs. I was dropping my daughter off at a friends house when their very Labrador came out and jumped up to greet me (my window was down) and put many scratches up to 24" long up and down my drivers door. Yikes.... I was a little ticked off, but what can you do.

I got 95% of them off with scratch remover/polish.

Ouch. Scratch marks from a Labrador !

What did you use to get rid of the scratch marks ? Zaino or some other product ?

Dude,

I would be f***king pissed. I hate when people cannot control their animals. That's why, no matter how much my wife and kids beg me...no animals!!!
