For the past few months, my 2010 Pilot (135k) has been running rough, slow acceleration, fits of clunkiness. I can't believe I haven't thought to change the air filter until today, its probably been two years. She's running like a champ now. Any long term damage that I may have caused by not changing it sooner?

Hey @soul, glad to hear the new air filter has your Pilot running smoothly again! It's amazing what a difference that one part can make, especially after a couple of years. What did the old filter look like when you pulled it out? Knowing how clogged it was might help other members give you a better idea of any other potential issues to check for.

Sounds like it did its job. Better all that in the filter than in the engine.

Yes, the engine can be damaged by never changing the air filter. An engine trying to produce power without proper air fuel mixture can cause overheating, extra wear and tear on engines components, fuel not burning efficiently causes carbon buildup in the combustion chamber and possibly leading to emission issues and clogged catalytic converters.

Do you recommend a specific method for disabling the VCM? I see something called VCM Tuner for $144 Products

Are you familiar with this? Any products or methods that a you'd recommend otherwise?
Thanks very much for your list of things to maintain!

Number 1 is highlighted as a priority. I wouldn’t own one of these vehicles without disabling the VCM.

  1. Disable the VCM, VCM Tuner II or S-VCM

Must order this one tomorrow morning early. They only make so many per week.

@Nail Grease related to finally changing engine filter, I also finally replaced my cabin air filter. It was just as bad or worse. I don't know if it coincidence but my A/C has a history of the compressor not turning on. A few bangs on the console would sometimes fix it. It got significantly worse this month, and a couple days after changing the cabin air filter the A/C blows only hot air. I am having my local shop replace the compressor only with a Global brand compressor. They suggest the condenser is fine so I can save some money there.

Three questions for you, Sir:
1. Any thoughts on the new cabin air filter causing the A/C to finally die? Or was that likely a coincidence?
2. Any opinions on Global brand compressors
3.; IS it okay to replace only the compressor and not the condenser also. Local shop is trustworthy, helping to save money and seemed confident that the condenser is still good.

Thank you for your insight throughout this post!

Cheers,
Steve

@dDub @Nail Grease Thanks for the reassurance!

Before I install it….

last week I got a new A/C compressor installed. Air is blowing cool now, all good! But I notice now a high-pitched whirring sound in the engine area when I accelerate that I didn’t notice before. Nothing alarming just a different sound that I’m used to hearing it. Any insight into what that might be before I install the VCM tuner? I just want to make sure I’m diagnosing one thing at a time. Thanks!
