Hello, everyone--
I have a brand new 2017 Elite, and I have purchased an Escort Max 360 radar detector, which I find is completely useless in the vehicle, due to all of the K-band signals emitted by the various electronic systems in the vehicle itself. Unless I turn off K-Band detection in the detector's settings, I am constantly bombarded with false K-Band alerts. Some of these are coming from other vehicles, I know, as well as navigation sensors on road signs, etc.; but a lot of them are being generated by the Pilot itself.

Does anyone have suggestions for a different brand of detector that can be used in the 2017 Pilot Elite without triggering all of this, or is there something I can try to improve the situation? I have read the Escort forums regarding firmware updates, etc., but apparently this is a growing problem with newer vehicles. I'm wondering if I wait long enough, there will be an update that allows this detector to work with my Elite.

The Max 360 is rated very high, and should be easy for me to sell, if there is another brand/model that might improve my situation. Thanks for any ideas anyone might have.

Have you contacted customer support for the scanner (assuming you just went to the forums). Maybe someone from the company could assist in answering questions regarding the k-band as well as the companies strategy on how to resolve this growing issue with newer cars? If the k-band issue is causing the unit to malfunction, return it.

But, from past experience many, many years ago with scanners, they usually give off false alarms when no 5-0 presence was ever near. But, we took that as a "just be careful" notice.

Worst case, SLOW DOWN. Way too many speeding accidents these days.

I'm not an intentional speeder, but a detector is nice to have when I'm unwittingly guilty of a heavy foot.

I have contacted Escort; they say there is really nothing they can do, except to address the problem in future firmware updates. Apparently the Pilot is one of the vehicles that causes the detector the most problems.

I am just beyond the 30 day return period; I purchased the unit at Amazon. The Max 360 gets 5 stars in all the reviews for being one of the best, most advanced detectors on the market, but apparently it doesn't get along well with the Pilot.

Take a look at the latest Valentine One. They specifically address the false K-band signals with a new algorythm and also now have an add-on device that will silence signals below a pre-set speed. I've not upgraded mine to the latest version but I've owned a V1 for over 20 years and have upgraded twice in that time.

Not trying to beat you up but...

Speed does NOT kill.

Idiotic drivers kill themselves and others.

The typical V1 owner likely drives faster than most, but not at all times.

The typical V1 owner knows when to speed and when to flow with traffic.

The typical V1 owner likely is a MUCH better driver than 95% of drivers.

When speed is an issue in a accident, typically there is substance abuse as well.

Drive safely and securely

Wow I'm shocked there's nothing they can do for you. When I had an 8500 x50 it used to give me a problem here and there when I hit a certain RPM in my Integra but I sent it to them in Ohio and they put a "shield" of some sort in the unit to block the silly K band issue that would happen.

I'm shocked that this is happening to you. The MAX is the best detector out there and if I could afford to ditch my 9500ix to get it I would in a heartbeat. Trade? LOL. I wonder if I'm going to have to start taking my detector with me on road tests in the future to see if any future cars have this problem. Man I feel for you because I wouldn't want to have to downgrade to a V1. Have you tried to test your detector in another car or send it in for service? Sometimes if it drops off the dashboard it might need a "tune up" to get fixed. The first thing I would try is a hard reset. I'm not sure of the procedure on that specific model but it would fix many K issues I used to have on my 8500 x50 for a few months at a time.

Have you tried changing the location of the unit on the windshield? Try to keep it in the middle of the windshield away from the top or bottom of the glass?

Ive always used a Valentine on previous cars. It's time for an upgrade and then I'll try it in my pilot. Although I don't see myself speeding in this car much ;)

Speeding doesn't cause accidents, inattention does. The problem is that most interstate speed limits are underposted by at least 25 mph, which forces good drivers to seek ways to avoid speed traps.

Are they still using radar? Most troopers and police departments I see in my area are using hand held laser's. Zap you before you can react. Plus your Elite has a radar transmitter which most likely is setting off your radar detector.

Must be the Blind Spot Information System on your Elite that is causing for Max 360 to give off constant false K band alerts. I don't have this issue on my EX-L with Honda Sensing when I use my Max 360.

Yes, the blind spot information system, as well as the adaptive cruise control, and probably other systems on the 2017 Elite are all causing the detector to give K-Band false alerts, sometimes every few seconds. But I was able to get Amazon to let me return the Max 360, even though I was a bit beyond their normal 30-day return period.

I've since ordered the newest version of the Valentine One, and so far, it's working perfectly. Driving in extremely rural areas, I get no false K-Band alerts. I will probably add the SAVVY accessory that eliminates alerts below a preset speed, which would also be useful.

My first test was driving from my home to my cottage; along the way I pass one shopping mall area which will broadcast a K-Band signal (door alarms, etc.), and the rest of the 15 mile trip is pretty much in rural areas where the detector should be silent unless police radar is present.

The Escort Max 360 picked up the K-Band signal at the mall, and continued falling every 1/2 mile or so, all the way to the cottage. The Valentine One sounded off as I passed the mall, and then was completely silent for the rest of the trip.

Tomorrow I'm heading out on a 250 mile trip, so I'll be able to check it out more thoroughly, but so far the difference is night and day. If you're looking for a radar detector that is apparently not confused by the signals emitted by the 2017 Elite, I think the Valentine One is the answer.

I am curious if there has been any update to this "old" thread.

I have a 2020 EX-L and I've mounted my Escort 8500 as seen in the pic. (yeah, I know it's old, but it does the job for me). I don't knowingly speed, I'm too much of a fuel miser. Occasionally, my thoughts wander as does my speed. I use my detector more as "police" detector for when I'm not paying attention. I just want to know where they are especially at night. The roads I usually drive on are through smaller towns where the local police have various "fishing spots". So I am not so much concerned with "early warning". Laser is still too expensive for many of the departments in my area, generally, just the highway patrol has them.

Like others, I have found the various systems in the EX-L present LOTS of falsing. I don't know exactly which ones. I've tried turning off cruise and LKAS, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. It's worse on a crowded highway, or on local roads with moderate traffic. I suspect it is from the sensor under the emblem, bouncing the radar of a target in front of me. Late at night (when I do a fair amount of my driving), and less crowded traffic conditions, it hardly falses at all.

Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned that changing the location made a difference. I am wondering how much difference it made.

I am also not averse to purchasing another one, but if I do I want it to be the right one, and one that won't false as much.

Thoughts? Thanks.

I switched from Escort to Val 1 for both my Hondas and rarely do I get a false alert on major highways. Still get the warning from commercial business automatic doors, but that is usually in a business district where speeding isn't practical - unless you are the type of driver who wants to see how quickly you can arrive at the next red light!

I use a bel pro 100, no issues with false positives on my 2019 or 2016 exl. never had a speeding ticket. Owned bel detectors for decades, always reliable.

I just looked at the Val 1. "Temp out of stock". Hmmmm.

I think I'm going to use it as is for the next few weeks and see if I get used to it. I really only need the warning on un-crowded roads, and my 8500 seems to do ok, though having to either silence it often or unplug it (and forgetting to plug it back in) can get pretty annoying. I'll still look around at what's available in case i decide to buy. Thanks for the replies.

I bought an Escort Max 360 several months ago. They now have the blind spot filtering software, and it works great in my Pilot; perhaps you have an older model. Also, unlike other radar detectors, it "learns" the locations of false hits, like those how fast you are going signs, and filters them out. This makes for a quiet ride, without any input.
